Computer stops responding on shutdown...

IN the past my computer would freeze at the the shutdown screen occasionally, but now it happens everytime i shut it down. Does anyone know how to fix this? It hangs at the "Windows is shutting down..." screen on restarts and shutdowns. I did some research on google but i still couldnt a solution.

I guess you are wondering why i want to do this. lol

After installing the ATI catalyst control center, my computer started to load really slowly when i logged on. It would also stop responding at times, and this is when the shut down problem first started. Thanks again man, i guess ill run driver cleaner.

Don't do the install in automatic and just install the actuall video drivers after you run Driver Cleaner. It may be al the excess crap they put on the disc causing trouble. GL!

Caveman I had similar problems as you when I first installed the software for my ATI card from the packaged disc. The solution for me was to download the most recent drivers from the ATI site, completely uninstall the existing software, run the driver cleaner and install the updated drivers. I also have the updated Catalyst Control Center installed, with no slow startups or hang on shutdown, as previously experienced with the packaged software.

You could try this to get the full benifit of your ATI card...also if you want to access the new features of WB5. However, if you simply don't want or need the Catalyst Control Center, or you discover it's the cause of your issue, I believe the D/L has a custom install to only load the drivers.

BTW - ATI offers a uninstall utility which will remove all ATI files from your system.

ATI site > Drivers and Software > Utilities > Various > CATALYST - ATI maintenance utilities > download "cat-uninstaller.exe".

You can then download the "Display driver only" file via the "Low Speed (Dial-up)" section.

This file will still install an executible which will run as a process during normal operation, but you may find the benefits outweigh the added resource use.

Otherwise, you already know you can use the Microsoft drivers for ATI products included with the OS, which are not quite as advanced - but do the job for general use.

I really dont want or need ATI software. After i run DriverCleaner, would windows reinstall the generic drivers that came on the system?

I just ran the ATI uninstaller and after a reboot, the drivers are still in the add/remove programs list.

I just have to ask if you run McAfee antivirus on your machine? I had the same problem as you and in my case it was the antivirus software conflicting with my PC's DLA software (allows you to drag and drop files to CD/R/RW). The only remedy there was for me to either get rid of McAfee or uninstall my DLA software. Uninstalling the DLA (in my case HP DLA) worked fine for me. Veritas Record now, HP record now, and stand alone DLA apps cause this conflict.

I recommend the DC and Corky's option since the default drivers really suck compared to the basic video drivers that are designed for your specific video card. Just skip the catalyst utilities and D/L only the actual video drivers...Unless you like working at 640 x 480 resolution.

WOW, 640x480 ??!! Ill get those drivers then, lol. Thank you for the help guys.

And, yes i am running mcafee antivirus software. How do i remove the DLA software? Will removing harm the system?

I concur. Use the uninstaller, then download the Catalyst drivers. When prompted for the install, check only drivers leaving "Control Panel" out. Before I moved to nVidia, I had this problem with ATI Catalyst.

I already tried the uninstaller, the ATI drivers are still in the add/remove programs list. I think im going to download the drivers with out the Control Center, then run drivercleaner. Will this work, or should i download the catalyst drivers after running drivercleaner?

In cases where you use some program other than Add/Remove to uninstall something it will leave the name of the program in the list even though it IS uninstalled. If you want to check go to System/hardware/device manager click on the display adapter and right click on the listing and choose properties and see who the driver manufacturer is on the driver tab.

Ok guys, i ran Driver Cleaner in safe mode and installed ONLY the drivers from ATI, but my computer still is not shutting down.

Gotta be something else then, have you used spybot search and destroy and other spyware crushers? Not the ones that are linked to pop ups?

Is it not shutting down (even if you click it twice) or is it a hard lock....?

Look in Administrative Tools/Events; errors? Did you follow the instructions in #1?

I havent tried clicking it twice, but ill get back to you on that tomorrow. Also, i run adaware/spybot/spysweeper everynight, but this doesnt seem to help.

If you did what I said in #1, then that pretty much eliminates a software problem. I don't think it's anything malicious. That leaves only two other sources; you don't have SP1 installed or (and more likely) it's a hardware problem. If I had to guess, I would think you have USB hardware installed. Make sure in Device Manager nothing shows as an exception (click option to 'Show Hidden Devices'). If none, then unplug external hardware (starting with any USB) one at a time and try the re-boot. Failing that, if this is a homemade, let me know the motherboard model (could be the bios acting up).

Just out of curiosity, did you do a page file tweak so that the page file is deleted at every shutdown? That makes for a long shutdown if you have a large page file, but a nice quick startup.
