It's possible that something is chewing up resources at boot time, like a network connection that's marginal, and eventually it finishes. If that is the case then doing the video driver update is just a coincidence.

So on startup Windows attempts to update your graphics driver, but doesn't find anything? It sounds like you should just manually load the newest driver for your videocard.
Which videocard are you running and which version? Also which version of Windows (including service packs) are you running?
