Love the part about if it screws up your computer, at least you're still protected.

I'm lucky I guess. No problems. But I don't change a lot of the settings.

Need a patch for the patch. Reminds me of some blue jeans a friend of mine once had. Been patched so many times, all that remained of the original pair were the seams holding together a network of mismatched patches.

Installing the patch can cause serious problems, Microsoft said in an advisory posted to its Web site Friday. The patch could lock users out of their PC, prevent the Windows Firewall from starting, block certain applications from running or installing, and empty the network connections folder, among other things, the software maker said.


I would download this patch and send it to all my foes ...

LoL..Welcome to my world..More than one "Critical Update" from MS has crashed my system.. Needless to say I am pretty carful when installing them..1 at a time with backups ready to go..*sighs*

I guess this one was just less choosey..LoL

Yeah, the damn patches have locked me out of my bank's web site, my credit cards site, Windows Update, and System Restore. I even uninstalled them, one at a time, but the damage is apparently already done. I can't even email Microsoft for help, because their little applet for email support does not work -- again, because of their buggy patches!

OK, I have what looks like a fix (at least it worked for me, anyway). First of all (do this first!) go to the downloads section of Microsoft's site and download the Windows Scripting Engine. Save it to somewhere you can find it. Then uninstall hotfix KB896688 (go into Add/Remove Programs, make sure the "Show Updates" checkbox is checked). This may temporarily disable your internet connection (it did for mine), which is why you want to download the Windows Scripting Engine first. Reboot, then install (actually, reinstall) the Windows Scripting Engine. Everything should work fine now. DO NOT reinstall the KB896688 hotfix (at least until Microsoft admits its buggy and fixes it).

The KB896688 hotfix, as far as I can tell, hoses the ability of Internet Explorer to use ActiveX controls and Java. The Windows Scripting Engine re-install fixes that.
