is it just me?
Saturday, October 8, 2005 by JJ-2000 | Discussion: Windows Vista
This had been bugging me for a while so thought I'd share it and maybe someone can put me right....
What/why is this facination with transparent edges to the windows?
It strikes me as its doing it becase it now can be done....
I just find it blurs the edges, makes it more difficult to identify where one window stops and why should I need to see a small margin of test/picture from the window underneath...
I'm sure I must be wrong, but I can't see the benefits...
Looking forward to being put right.
Cheers

Skinners will use all the tools/tricks accessible to them....because they can.
Skin Users then have a greater choice....jaggies or trans.....because the Skinners can....

boarding houses appear to be much less crowded. the down side becomes obvious when you attempt to sit in an already occupied chair.

Skinning is about possibilities, not practical use. A user is content with what he/she sees. A true skinner will want to know what lies beyond the horizon.

It's not about benefits necessarily... it's about style... it looks cool. That's pretty much the bottom line.

1 - better blending of edges for cleaner graphics in GUI.
2 - eventually, you may have an RSS reader, or some other information object on the desktop, which you would be able to see through say the corner of a window - allowing you to keep your eyes peeled for information coming into this object, while completing your work in the current application without having to minimize the window to view the information.
3 - you may have a web cam, and if there were a window designed with a transparent section for say an IM, you could easily view the person on the other side of the IM while easily typing at the same time - using maximizing your screen real estate.
4 - you may want to have a music video running while you work, and can see this through the transparency.
5 - you may be testing programs for memory leakage, or CPU usage, and you could set the meter or text based information while running the program at full size in an effort to push the envelope.
6 - you might just like the wallpaper so much, that you want to have that as part of the window title bar.
7 - Why not?
