Help with image masking please?

I am trying to build a widget that requires me to mask off part of an image for use, but I can't seem to figure out how to do that. Does anyone know of a tutorial, or an existing widget that I can dig apart to learn masking? Or could someone post some real simple instructions?
What I need to do is take say Image B which is a large image, then use a mask to essentially cut out part of that image.
