How can I force IP to change file type icon ??

IP does not seem to be able to do that

Of course, I can force manually the file type to change its icon with the rightclick menu. I would like something more straightforward. When I apply a package, I would like this package to be completely applied when I click the Apply button in IconPackager

With the IconPackage applied:
1 - Start IconPackager
2 - Select Icons and Cursors in the left pane
3 - Select Files on the top of window that is now displayed
4 - Find the icon you want to change, and then use the browse features to find and assign the new image
5 - Use File > Save as.., to save the new package under a unique name
6 - Restore all Icons using the Tools menu
7 - Go to where you saved the new package and double-click to install
Note - items #6 & #7 are the conservative approach. You can also save as a new name, and if the package is displayed in the packages list, you can apply directly from there.

The problem is that the icon in the package is already ok. It is just that IP refuses to apply it on the filetypes I've manually assigned some other icons before.
By playing with my computer, it seems to happen with fileformats associated to some reader (pdf with acrobat, WMV with media player, and so on). With those kind of file/reader associations, IP fails to apply sometimes its own icon s.

Did you try manually restoring the defaults to those icons before applying a package?
You might go so far as to restore the default Windows theme to get back to ground zero, and restore the defaults in the IconPackager settings category.
This assumes that you are running the current released version of IconPackager, not trying to apply a version3 package with an older version of IP, and that the files in question are registered.
One other option might be to deselect the "Only load File icons for registered file types" under IconPackager/Settings.

The only way to make IP work on .WMV files was to deselect WMP as my default media player, otherwise it fails at changing this icon ...

This is not my experience with either Adobe or WMP10. If you assign a package like Icon-A-Day and you don't have custom icons on .wmv and .pdf then there is another problem in your configuration. Some packages do not include all the icons you would normally see but this is a good one to check with. Go to the settings page and check your settings against mine;
Window Settings - All checked, Icon size 48 pixels
Advanced - cache 1024 KB
Opening Icon Packages - Restore all icons, Use samrt package loading, Only load File icons for registered file types and Apply package icons to IE Favorites all checked, all others unchecked
Saving Icon Packages - All Checked
Display - All Checked
I'm not saying this is the best way to set it up, but it will let you check and see if it's you settings or something else causing the problem. After you change the settings then load the package and then reboot your computer. Test the pdf's and wmv's by starting each with a double click from Windows Explorer. If they revert to the original icons then you might have some kind of Spyware blocker or script blocker that keeps IP from making registry changes.

set IP to windows default, then restore the forced back to default if it didn't change, then try a package
