Stardock Central Crashes Whenever I try to Download Skins

Friday, September 2, 2005 by Thomcat | Discussion: Stardock Software

SIn Stardock Central I can look at any of the skins available at WinCustomize with no problem but when ever I try to download one, Stardock Central crashes. If I see something I want, I have to open my browser and download it from WinCustomize that why. Didn't have a problem until just a few days ago.

http://storage.stardock.com/files/sdcentral_setup.exe download and re-install right over the one you have.

Make sure C:\Program Files\Stardock\SDCentral\Download folder is there. If not, create it.

I had the same exact problem and its been driving me nuts.....

Until I added *.wincustomize.com to my trusted sites in internet explorer.
Lo and behold I was then able to download all the files using stardock central with no further crashes.
Give it a go and see if it works

I made sure the download file existed. I added *.wincustomize.com to my trusted sides. I went in to my firewall (which is the Windows OneCare Live Beta) and made sure that SDCentral and WinCustomize browser were allowed. One Wednesday I did a full system recovery because of some unrelated problems, but before I did the recovery, sdcentral was crashing so I hoped maybe the revcovery would take care of that problem was well but it didn't. Even after the full recovery and the fress install of all stardock programs, sdcentral continued to crash. Even though I don't want to I would install and re-install all Stardock programs but I don't know if that would help. Do you have anymore suggestions. Thanks for your help so far, I never asked for help on the forum before.

Here's a link to a tutorial by Corky_O, I may help you fix your SDC problem to clear your cache before reinstalling. Link
Corky's got several good tutorials for those just starting out with the programs. Click on his name when your at the tutorial and it will take you to his WC site.

I'm at a complete loss. I followed on your suggestions, including the tutorial by Corky_O. I then uninstalled SDCentral following his instructions. I then closed down every other program using Smart Close before I downloaded and reinstall SDCentral. I then tried to download a Cursor and SDCentral crashed as it attempted to download. I don't no what to do. Am I just going to have to live with? All all a my Stardock products work fine other than this problem. Do you have any more thoughts on what to do?

Thomcat,

Just downloaded successfully via SDC version 2.10.343, so it sounds like perhaps some problem with queued downloads, the download manager is conflicting with something, or a rogue file.

Some possible steps would be:

- Delete all items found in the "C:\Program Files\Stardock\SDCentral\Download" folder
- Start SDCentral > select Skins and Themes category > click Downloads button > delete any files listed
- Check the download path listed in Tools > Settings > Skin Libraries > Downloads section to make sure it is listed as "C:\Program Files\Stardock\SDCentral\Download"

If all is as it should be, and you still experience crashes, you might try right-clicking the skin you want to download in SDC > select "Download to folder.." > select a folder > click OK.

If this works, then it is probably something in the internet settings somewhere - sorry, not sure at this time what it might be.

There is always the thing you are not excited about, which would be uninstall everything, clear the cache, delete all Object Desktop, Stardock, and SDCentral folders found in the following locations:

- "C:\Program Files"
- "C:\Program Files\Common Files"
- "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs"
- "C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Local Settings\Temp"

Note - you will need to tell windows to show hidden files and folders in the Folder Options dialog to see Local Settings folder.

I found my old email from when I first purchased ObjectDesktop, the link download version 2.05.319 Buld 83 of SDCentral. I install this and was able to download a skin withoout a problem. But it said there was a new version of SDCentral which I than installed (Version 2.10) and when I tried to download with this it crashed. Do I need to run this latest version and what in it causes it to crash when the old version doesn't. Thank for any help.

Using 2.05 isn't a problem. Instead of the un-install/re-install song and dance, just click on C:\Program Files\Stardock\SDCentral\Restore and you're back to the working version.

Using Version 2.10, I deleted everything in the downloads file and in the queued download in SDCentral. When I checked the download path in settings it wasn't going where you said it should, I changed that. I then tried a download and everything worked just fine. Thanks everybody for all your help.
