Google IM service?

Tuesday, August 23, 2005 by Island Dog | Discussion: Internet

Speculation abound late Monday regarding Google's oft-rumored plans to launch an instant messaging network that would compete with AOL, MSN and Yahoo. The New York Times reported that a Google communications service would launch Wednesday, and the LA Times confirmed it would go by the name "Google Talk."

Although such rumors have long proliferated throughout the Internet and are usually taken with a grain of salt, Google has activatedtalk.google.com. In addition, a messaging service utilizing Jabber -- an open source instant messaging platform -- was found to be running on that sub-domain.

Looks interesting. I will have to give it a try.

It seems to require a Gmail account, so if anybody needs one I still have many available.

Unfortunately it doesn't connect in with other IM services. Looks like I'll be getting Trillian soon so I can be on all of the services at once. People are getting too darned spread out now.

If you want to add me to your list, my gmail username is "mfc131"

The review in Ars Technica (link posted in another thread) said it was pretty much lacking in features found in more popular IM clients.
No group chat.
No file send capability.
No emoticons.
No view of previous conversations.
No skinning. (that one might kill it for WC folks)
It is supposed to have good integration with Gmail, and they were able to open it under Trillian.
There's also no current Linux or OSX versions available.
I think I'll wait until they get some more common features integrated.

I figure Google will be upgrading the Google Talk. I hope so, it needs some extra's on it.
