Norton antivirus

This has happened to me twice since trying to use widgets downloaded from the site. My brand new Norton Antivirus, on a couple of them, said they were running high risk script and recommended to stop the script. Each time I told Norton to go ahead and stop it. This did not do any good. This script certainly is malicious because it started by attacking norton and disabling it, then it went on to stop the internet explorer from working correctly, then media player, and worst of all system restore was also messed up with the script. Fortunatley, the second time this happened (which was just last night) I had purchased GoBack with Norton System Works and thank goodness I did. I was able to put the system back the second time. The first time, I had to do a completely fresh install of Windows XP - YUK! So beware of the widgets and I am simple just not going to use desktop X anymore. I just purchased Object Desktop yesterday and I am finding out certain things the hard way. Any advice, suggestions, or opinions would be appreciated. Also, has anyone else had these kinds of issues? Is it just desktopX? Thanks.

Which widgets? I use widgets all the time and have had no problems at all. Norton has messed my computer up a couple times, but never anything related to Desktop X (or wincustomize in general).

When I used to use Norton it would want to stop almost every object or widget when I used them. I just set Norton to allow them. My advice, get rid of Norton, not DesktopX.

I use weather widgets with norton systemworks 2003 and haven't had a single problem.

One of them was GT3 Calendar by Tiggz, the others I don't remember exactly but I know one of the others was for weather. Maybe it does have something to do with Norton. It tells me the widget is trying to run malicious script. It recommends that I stop the script from running. After that, all h_ll breaks loose and my computer starts going crazy. As it effects so many areas of my computer, I just assumed that the malicious script had gotten through. I don't know. Thanks for you input and I'm looking foward to hearing others.

I wished I didn't have to use Norton but it is a work requirement. It starting to look like public opinion is putting the evil eye on Norton. If that is so, I too will just tell it to allow the script. I'm new to this Object Desktop, second day. I surely don't mean to offend anyone and from what widgets I did use - I thought they were absolutely cool! So I would be glad to know that it was Norton and not the widget(s).

Norton will say that for almost any scripted object.  It is one reason I left Norton.  All it is, I figured, was a warning to let you know something is happening.  Since it isn't an unknown, you know what it is and where you got it, its a safe bet that you can go ahead and allow it.  Look at the download numbers.... you gotta figure so many thousands of people wouldn't be affected and the object still up?

Stardock and WC are safe places to download.  Never have I gotten a bug, or even spyware from this site.

That's real good to know. I did take into consideration the fact that it had been downloaded by so many, but I never figure Norton (as much as it costs) would be wrong. On the other hand, what everyone is saying is GOOD NEWS! Thanks to everyone so far for there input.

Well, it's not so much wrong as it is vague.  It knows scripting can be bad, and it knows it sees a script.  So it's telling you what it knows.  At least you know it's trying to protect you.  As long as you know that, and why it happens, you can work your way around it as you have here.

Kind of like using a nuke to go after a mosquito.

Thats funny! The funny part is that Norton did not do it to all the widgets I tried, only several, one of which I remembered and named above. Thanks.

Well, not all widgets need a lot of scripting.  Many of the ones that Tiggz makes, among other authors, usually are complex and heavily scripted.  That's what makes them so functional.

I have to agree with everything GoodMorphing said. That is one reason I switched to Trend Micro.

Norton is a HUGE pain in the butt to any app which uses Windows' native scripting. *kicks it*
