As far as I know .gif and maybe .png are the only formats that support animation.

Only gifs support animation and they are limited to maximum 256 colours.

.gif's might increase load time....maybe not one at a time, but pages of them sure would.

Depends. Gif doesn't compress as much as jpegs, but since they are limited to max 256 colours the size get limited as well.
But if there is a large amount of frames in the animation even a 50x50 image might grow to quite few hundered kilobytes. Deviantart allows gifs, but have a limit to the size of the avatars.

So let's make it a 50 x 50 pixel .gif with a max size of 10-15 k. A lot can be done with only 10k

I created my own spellcheck smiley.

SD, go for it and see if an error pops up. I've seen skin perviews that were gifs.

I like this idea.

Besides, if it slows things down too much, we can alway go back to static.

SD, you're animations are pretty cool! That said, so many animations in other forums are in-your-face annoying. Escape stops the animation and I do it pretty much every time. Old and crotchety I may be but it wouldn't break my heart if we stayed away from them.

Say 15, then it will be the same as deviantart and I can use that one without further editing.

I like the idea but would prefer to see some "theme" type ability with the overall look, like at the old site. All this blue is a little hard to take. It should be a priority, especially since this is a skinning site.

The last time this came up they were still on a bug hunt and hadn't moved to the new servers yet. Hopefully, they now have the time and energy to get around to skinning the site.

I think there's a little while to go yet with other site tweaks, etc before adding oodles of new groovy bits...
