The source for Avalon info would be Microsofts site on avalon: http://msdn.microsoft.com/Longhorn/understanding/pillars/avalon/default.aspx
One of the article you find there talks about how Avalon support 3D
http://msdn.microsoft.com/Longhorn/understanding/pillars/avalon/default.aspx?pull=/library/en-us/dnlong/html/avalon3d.asp
Neowin.net got a nice article that explains briefly what Avalon is: http://www.neowin.net/forum/lofiversion/index.php/t111675.html
One extract from that article:
| What kind of graphics support will Avalon provide? It will take advantage of the merged graphics functionality of GDI+ and DirectX, as well as the Media Framework from the Digital Media Division as well as providing a rich vector based format with support for SVG markup language. |
I'm not sure if this means it would rely on DirectX or adopts its functionality.
What I think that article meant was that new games and programs with 3D graphics will choose to use Avalon instead of DirectX. But what it said about The easiest way to describe it is the fact that Avalon is basically DX10, or "DX Next" is missleading, because Avalon first and foremost a presentation technology, not just a set of 3D APIs.
If Longhorn is going to run under DirectX? I am not sure. But I'd think there would be a version of DirectX shipped with it in any case for backward compatibility reasons.
