DesktopX / IconX problem

I have just installed DesktopX 3.0.
Very frequently the desktop reverts to the non-IconX state.
Then when I bring up the DesktopX dialog everything automatically jumps back into place or if I click on any folder on the desktop everything goes back into place.
I haven't found the pattern yet - sometimes seems to occur when I do a download or open Internet Explorer - but there may be no connection.
Any ideas why this would happen?

More info: The Show Desktop seems to act as a toggle between the two states. If I click it a second time then it reccovers the DesktopX desktop.
