Animated Gif from movie

I have seen so many animated gifs, most in peoples avatars that feature quick clips from movies. I know how to take clips and make them into an animated gif. My question is how do you say convert a small .avi clip into an animated gif?

I know how to extract the frames, but it takes a while when working with too many. I was just looking for software or another way to automatically extract and convert.

Gif Movie Gear should do what you want. You can import an avi, then export it as a gif. Fairly easy and painless.
It has a 30 day trial download if you want to check it out and see if it will fit the bill.

Thanks everybody. I found a way to do it in Animation Shop, but I'm going to try that software also.
