How do I convert gif to PNG?
It has to be easy . . but how

I have a gif. It's a logo. Blue gradiant text on a white field. I want to use it as a object layer in DesktopX. I know I can convert it to a bitmap and use "magic pink" to make it transparent (I did that using MS Paint). But the results were jaggy.
I thought that maybe a PNG would have the same issue and would be smailler.
But I can't figure it out. I have Adobe Photoshop but have never used it before (it was provided by the company I'm with). I also have Paint.net (looks cool, supports transparency, free).
Where's the hidden button that says "Do what Zubaz wants"?

When I save using the method you describe and load as an object, I see the logo I want squished to the left of the image and gray. The rest of the image is black.

go to google, enter irfanview
download the program, install, then open it.
hit "s", then choose ".gif" option as the format in the dropdown menu list.
don't know why your other program squishes it...

Zubaz, bad news for you: you won't be able to convert that GIF to PNG and get nice smooth transparency. The GIF format is a flat file that probably has some anti-alised colour on the edges. It's part of the image and when you convert it to PNG it will be kept. You could do it somewhat but it will reqiure some work in Photoshop and may not have the best results anyway. You'll need first to change the image from Indexed Color to RGB, then to take the eraser or the lasso tool (with anti-aliased click on) and delete everything that you would like to be transparent. Then "Save for Web" and select 24 bits PNG. Could be a lot of work, but if you realy want to do it, it can be done. Results won't be perfect though, the best would be to get your hands on the original layered file if you can.
BTW: Note that if you are planning to make an object with a GIF you grabbed from the Net, it will most likely be rejected if you try to upload it here unless you obtain permission from the artist who made it, ot the company that owns the image's copyright.

Thanks Paxx. The image is a corporate one for the company I work for. I think that DX could be an amazing way of deliverign some of the services we provide and I wanted to throw together some proof-of-concepts (My first two attempts passed moderation on WC! 
). I may have to leave them jaggy.

But to save a graffic to another format all I have to do is open the graffic in the program and use the menu to "Save as" and it gives me numerous choices of formats..I have never used PSP,or Photoshop (soon to change) but I would imagine they funcvtion somewhat the same?..
Anyway..just something you can try.
