New User could use some help please

I can't seem to find in the readme's how to hide desktop icons could some one please let me know Thanks in advance

If your using windows XP..just right click on the desktop to bring up the sub-menu choose *Arrange Icons by..* scroll down to *Show Desktop Icons* and uncheck it by clicking...do the reverse to turn them back on..

Not the first time I've seen that advice, but I have no such option. Is this maybe a XP Pro vs XP Home thing? (I have home)

Should be available in both versions by default.

I have seen the "Arrange Icons by..." a the top of the right-click menu not show up before, but can not remember the reason. If that is gone = no sub-menu.

Will post here again if I remember.

I remember,

Arrange icons by ... option not available in right-click menu when either IconX or DesktopX is loaded.

If you don't have one of these programs loaded, and still have problems, you should be able to use the Hot Keys:

- left click once in an empty spot on desktop, then hit "Shift+F10". You should see the context menu with "Arrange icons by.." in it.

I have the "Arrange Icon By" menu, but there's no "Show Desktop Icons" option.

I have the home edition also. Show desktop icons is right under align to grid.

The shft+F10 thing works, I just tried it.. Thats weird Koasati..I thought all windows XP had that feature...

Yeah, it should be there.

If you do an upgrade to XP from another Windows, the deskop icons settings are kept - though the option is still supposed to be there.

Koasati,

The only other thing I have to offer is using the Shift+F10>Shift+I(to select the Arrange icons by)>Shift+D(which toggles the "Show desktop icons"). It may take a few seconds.

Beyond that I am out of suggestions unless I stumble upon some setting that I have not seen before.

Ok, Corky, is there some way you can add/delete items from that sub-menu? I took a quick look around and didnt see one, but I figure you would know..LoL

I've probably tweaked it out of existance at some point. No problem, as I have no desktop icons anyway . I was just curious.

::scratches his head:: Uhhhh...im just askin..but wouldnt stand to reason that..>ahem< and this is just a question..LoL to get rid of desktop Icons, or make them appear.you have to have some first??..

You can alter context menus for file types and folders via the "Folder Options>File Types>select a file extension>Advanced button>New>fill out the new action (Action = name of option as you want it to appear, and Application used to perform action = "program you want to handle file" plus %1 as a place holder). This is more for efficiency sake, as the Open with ... is also available. (There are some exceptions to this, which requires editing the registry).

Desktop context menu should be available for modification in the registry as well. I have not tried this one yet - maybe someday.

There may be another way, but I don't know what it would be.

DZ... I see what you're saying, but even if I create a shortcut on the desktop (so now I have a desktop icon), that option doesn't appear in the menu.

I was just kidding around with you Koasati,LoL, if the option was available to you. at best it would just be greyed out and unusable.. In this case, you dont even have it. Something definitely got tweaked!..::nods::

Sheesh Corky, thats a major proceedure for getting an option that he should already have...I thought maybe it was a matter of checking or unchecking a box somewhere..::sighs:: Ah well.. So much for the easy way..

Corky, What about the new Power toys??..seems to me I skimmed through the features and one of them was an enhanced right click menu.. Know anything about them?

where is my other context show/hide desktop and all and why is all greyed out. any suggestions?
