Hey computer experts I need your help once again.. on voltage ratings...

Thursday, March 3, 2005 by LittleBearJason | Discussion: PC Hardware

I just installed a GF FX 5500 AGP 8X 256MB. Now newegg and XFXforce.com claims it requires a 250w min pwr supply. When I got the box in , it said 300.

Now... SISoft Sandra is reporting these voltage rails... from the voltage sensor. Note im only running this card. All 3 PCI slots are free , and theyre gonna stay free too.

Voltage Sensor(s)
CPU Voltage : 1.60V
+3.3V Voltage : 3.31V
+5V Voltage : 5.05V
+12V Voltage : 11.37V
-12V Voltage : 1.21V
-5V Voltage : 5.11V
Standby Voltage : 4.85V
Battery Voltage : 3.26V

Am I okay here?

This is yours. (they don't improve with age ):

+12 = 14a
+5v = 25a
+3.3v = 18a

This is where you want to be:

3.3V - 28A or better
5V - 30A or better
12V - 18A or better

We've had this coversation before, Jason

If it's running at full load and you're not having any problems, then go with it. Having said that, my guess is that you're going to encounter problems with lock ups and restarts. At least if it does, you'll know what the problem is...

Is that sorta like: if it ain't broke, you ain't played with it enough?

Well . for one thing , I got some insight on this from XFX. they said that when Newegg places an order for inventory , they want their inventory to list the card as 300 watts although the card in reality only requires 250 watts. They list that because they have a lot of system builders buying these cards along with mobos.

Any system should have at least 300 watts. I find that overclocking and playing hours on end not only starts to cook the card, the power supply is draining more power over to the graphics, and then you will crash. (and obviously lose the game).

I wouldn't go with anything less than 400 but that's me. Happy computing!

I am echoing others here but, I wouldn't go with less than 400W.
