DesktopX crashing - directgui.dll

Sunday, February 20, 2005 by Snuffy21 | Discussion: DesktopX

I've suddenly developed a problem with running DesktopX on my system. Whenever I load the program, it crashes. I get the typical WindowsXP crash window stating that DesktopX.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. I clicked on the link that provides me more information about the crash and this is what I get:

Error signature:
AppName: desktopx.exe AppVer: 0.0.0.0 ModName:directgui.dll
ModVer:2.0.0.0 Offset: 000085d5

It also creates a crash log on my system, which I could provide if needed. If anybody has any idea about this, I would love to hear your suggestions!

I don't know what causes it in the first place, but to keep it from happening the next time you run DesktopX, do the following:

(Note: I'm using Windows XP.)

Open the following folders
c:\Documents and Settings
the folder with your Windows User Name
Local Settings
Application Data
Stardock
DesktopX
CurrentTheme

DELETE EVERY FILE in the CurrentTheme folder. This does NOT delete the themes, objects or wdgets in the DirectX folder located in your Program Files.

You will then be able to start DesktopX without crashing.
