sspearl - I'm a newbie too, don't feel bad! As for what file types Logons and Bootscreens should be...I *think* the file extensions are .bootscreen and .logonXP. Could be wrong.
When I dowload files I often save them to the "My Downloads" folder, although more experienced users may tell you to do otherwise. I've never had a problem loading them once I downloaded them, so I'm at least 1/2 right. You can also save them to your C: > Program Files > Stardock > Wincustomize > Logon Studio or a similar path for your bootscreens.

Visit this site above this post. Write down the extension for the programs you will be using.
Next when you are on the save as dialog You are given two types of files compressed folders and all files. Select all files from the drop down. Now add the appropriate file extension for the program you are downloading files for.
Once you have done this click save. Once done downloading , click open , TADA
