Need your Opinion

Mohamed shafraz

Sunday, January 30, 2005 by butch123 | Discussion: OS Customization

Mohamed shafraz Has authorized me to port his library here. but..I have noticed that he has a lot of different things...for example..different kinds of icons, logons, some window blinds, a lot of wallpaper. But not wanting to flood the wallpaper section, or any other section, I thought it would be a good idea to have people, users, wizops, staff...take a look at the stuff and leave me an opinion. that way it would make it easier, wouldnt have to flood anything, or send a lot of useless submissions for nothing and at the same time the things that are of interest to the majority I would port. This way it would save the staff a lot of time and effort. So let me know what you think.

Copying, with permission, an author's library from one site to another site really isn't porting. I think the link you provided is sufficient enough for anyone who desires to use Mohamed Shafraz's works to be able to find them.

Something to keep in mind... Porting is when you take someone's work from one format, and reassemble it in some other format (with permission, of course). That would include converting an msstyle to WindowBlinds, or making an IconPackage out of a bunch of lose icons. However, simply uploading someone's wallpaper directly is not porting. If the work involved is nothing more than downloading from one site and uploading to another, I'd say skip it.

Also, you might want to try and convince the author to submit his own work here. Maybe he's not interested in WinCustomize, but it's worth a try.

Scribe Essencay I agree with you..taking wallpaper from one site to another is not porting. But, taking a logon from one style and transforming it to Logon Studio is porting. So that is why I have not uploaded any of the wallpaper. I think the link is sufficient. Or another thing I can do is put the wallpaper inside the Logon..the matching wallpaper to the Logon...just a thought.

Super Wizop MikeB314 I agree thats why I havent uploaded any wallpaper. Because what I do is port. Just thinking of the users that might want to have the matching wallpaper to the Logon or the blind, whatever. But I am sure I know what porting is anyways (lol).

Any wallpapers uploaded by anyone other than their author will be rejected, with, or without permission.

To upload 'works' to your gallery it MUST BE YOUR INPUT....either ENTIRELY your own work, or work ported with permission from a third party.

I think the link to Mohamed Shafraz gallery at themexp.org should be removed, because all of his downloads contains spy/ad/mal-ware.

Yrgal....that apparently is the fault of themexp.org, not Mohamed Shafraz....

Jafo.. Themexp.org still gives you the option NOT to have your Uploads loaded with ads. Just today I got a letter stating that my ranking 35th in overall Downloads on their site WOULD have given me $60 dollars, but since I do NOT allow any adware in anything I have posted there in the past, I miss out on the earnings every month from their ads.

So.. Mohamed and ANY other person that submits to Themexp is knowingly AGREEING to have their work wrapped with ads... and would rather not waste their time here. That is why Butch123 is basically moving everything that is at themexp.org onto WC, because the people that upload to Themexp dont want to upload here - cuz they wont get paid.

wstaylor You are right 100%. They wont get paid and dont want to upload here. But, I noticed that they do have a lot of good stuff, and I believe it is an asset to the community to have their works shown here...a lot of work...debugging and changing styles and everything, but a pleasure.I figure if the users here can benefit from them, why not? Thank you for explaining that.

Not anymore. I've got an e-mail from the admin at themexp.org stating that option has been removed for new members.

Then I say that is their loss. I think the author should be the one to upload here. If they have the kind of
attitude that says "I'm not uploading to WC because I won't get paid" then I really don't think it is right that their work even be ported here unless it is done by them. I for one won't be downloading any of them, regardless of their quality. ( and to be fair, I won't rate them either )

Nothing against you Butch123 at all. You do some good ports.

I guess I was generalizing a bit too much.. not ALL authors at ThemeXP want to just get paid - many of them are anti-stardock as well.. - I would like to see msstyle authors port more of their OWN work... not have someone else do it.

Butch123 - you do a good job at what you do. But, I think that it is important for you to upload works by people that are interested in WC (maybe even members) - Someone that has NO interest in WC at all or the skinning community in general, but just want to get paid, should not have their work ported over to this site. If I had a suggestion, it would be that you find authors that are active accross the board in the skinning community - and port their work, not just people from ThemeXP trying to make a buck.

wstaylor That is a good idea of course...WC is naturally the most important to me and I think I will look for those types of authors. Maybe a lot more beneficial to the whole community in general. But when you start in, you have to take what you can get. You dont have to like it. But great advice and definetely something I am going to loko into. never been a man who like to take without giving. Thank you for your encouragement.

If that's the case they can upload the works themselves.

Butch.. just wondering..
Have you considered making themes on your own vs porting?

wstaylor - Well said. I should lighten up a bit sometimes and be a bit more tactful like you did, but the mere mention of ThemeXP sometimes leaves me feeling all icky inside.

JourneyMan Phoon Yes really I have. I got just a few committements to some people I promised to port for, then I want to see where the future is going to go. I definetely am thinking of trying my hand at making DX themes seeing I like DX.

Yea they may be members and post comments or Download skins - at the same time they could possibly be msstyle authors that dont have a copy of SKS...

As they cannot upload msstyles... The authors I was referring to were the ones who don't even participate in ANY other sites/forums - therefore their work does not belong here...
