Black outline

I just want to know what is the best and easiest way to get that black outline on images that you see alot . I mean I can get it by buttonizing something but it just doesn't work if the corners are rounded. Any suggestions?

The easiest way would be to create them that way, as opposed to trying to apply some sort of filter after the fact. But that's just my opinion.....

Are you talking about making a graphic from scratch? or taking an existing image and putting a black outline around it? Do you have a sample of an image to which you're trying to apply that effect?

Sorry, don't mean to answer your question with more questions there's different ways to achieve it, just depends on what you're working with.

Just knocked that up in Paintshop Pro. It takes longer to write what I did than do it! But here goes...

I selected the draw tool and changed the line style in 'custom' to rounded end caps, set the size to 39 pixels, and colour to black to draw the line. I then took the selection tool, set to rectangle, and while holding down shift drew around my new black line, then clicked inside the selection and saved that to alpha channel. Then I created a new layer and loaded the selection from alpha channel, then contracted that selection by three pixels. I then filled the selection with white and duplicated the layer. To get the 3D effect I then used the cutout tool, set to zero offset, 81 opacity, 12.5 blur, black colour with no interior fill, and applied that to the duplicate layer.

If that was the wrong answer - oops! But I hope you enjoyed the mini button tutorial anyway

Following Fuzzy's lead, here's how I make a similar image with PSP 8.10

I selected the Preset Shape tool > Rounded Rectangle, with a simple gradient for the background color, and the foreground set to black, Stroke set to 3. I then drag out the basic shape, select the Pen tool to adjust the corners so they are rounded. Viola!
There's a lot more I could do with it, but just to show there's more than one way to skin a cat, I'll stop here.

I wouldn't use the Preset Shape tool for that....... I'd use the Pen tool..........if I could draw a cat.
