Object Desktop Problems... no end...

Wednesday, January 26, 2005 by Piotr Trzeciak | Discussion: New Users

Here is the question I would like to post to see if I get any responses.
I'm doing it in New Users forum, since I consider myself a new user.
I purchased the whole Object Desktop in November.
In addition I got ObjectDock+
I would like to use WindowsBlinds to skin the UI, DesktopX to run objects and keep my desktop clean, and Object Dock to get access to certain programs and folders quickly. Other goodies would be nice (like ObjectBar, DesktopFX), but are not mandatory.
Since day one I had nothing but trouble with all this.
I'm running Dell Inspirion 5160 laptop, with 3.2 GHz P4 HT, 1G RAM, and Nvidia GForce FX Go5200 video card with 64M. This should be plenty.
Here are the problems I see:
1. My Programs menu dies. I go to Start->All Programs, and all I see is big empty patch (with just small icons sometimes), that does not disapper. Reloading DesktopX helps sometimes but not always. So does closing ObjectDock.
2. Some programs (Firefox for example), sometimes, start up with most of the work area empty (transparent), and witgets come back when the mouse pointer moves over them.
3. Something refuses to shutdown, because the only way to shutdown is to hold Power for a few seconds and do hard shutdown.
4. ObjectBar disappears when screensaver kicks in... but it is there, because when I do CTRL+ESC... it comes back.

So, now the question is: did I waste my money...?
Do some of the programs refuse to work with others??? any ideas???
HELP!!!

#1,#2 and #4 sound like graphic drivers/settings. Look at the Nvidia version and make sure it's 66.93 or higher. Your screen saver is running at a different resolution and when it refreshes the screen, OB is off the screen. Set the SS to the same resolution. #3 sounds like a Firewall....look in Administrative Tools\Event Viewer\System and see what the warning was...should be User32 error.

Btw: no, you didn't waste your money.

Thanks!!! Sounds like a great advice... and my driver is older than the current one. Now, how do you set a resolution of the screensaver? Could not find any options... I'm using simple starfield ss. Thanks again!!!

hummm...you may not be able to change it on MS SS (it may be an option only on 3rd party SS). Why don't you just use the 'monitor' power saver in Control Panal/ Power Options. It should work on a Lap.

I figured out that my problem is ObjectDock+. The moment I start it... I loose Programs menu and other things. I will go to the right forum to see what I can find there... Thanks!!!
