Friday, January 7, 2005 by Hybrid216 | Discussion: Beginners

ok I dwnlded the bootskins, and installed them, and they work perfectly....BUT after the boot screen closes and the log screen is supposed to pop up, i get an ERROR screen, tellin me that something is wrong, and that I have to restart in Safe Mode and uninstall any newly installed software/hardware. I dont know what the problem is...any help would be nice

Some BIOS' have settings which can stop Bootskin working properly. You may just be one of the unlucky ones.

It's a known issue with SP2 upgrade. In some cases Safe Mode uninstalation of Bootskin and re-installation helps. But there are cases where nothing helps to resolve the problem, but going back to original XP bootskin.

I had version 1.0 and it worked perfectly. Unfortunately, I lost it due to some lethal spyware. I can't get any of the available versions to work and I have tried everything. Is there any way I can get a copy of the original....it was perfect for me.

:oints to Fuzzy Logic & FilkoSE's replies::

Both of those are very accurate, Bootscreens are one of the most touchy parts of the OS and if you did not have the presence of mind to create a restore point before attempting to use one, you may well still be trying to get your original installation back ( I know from personal experience)

They seem to be not only affected by certain BIOS setups but also they are Service Pack dependant, meaning you cant use a bootskin intended to run on XP with no service packs installed, on XP with SP1 installed, and now it appears the same is true with SP2. so now you have three different formats..

My thoughts are this, with so many awesome Logins that do work with little to no trouble and actually stay until you Log-in, vs a bootscreen that may or may not cause you a very big headache, for only a few seconds of viewing..why bother with the bootscreen at all if you know it already has issue's?

Sooo, unless you really dont care about your current OS installation, have everything backed up thats important to you, keep poking away at it until you manage to get it to work
Or, just accept it as is and use Logins instead..
There really are a few very cool logins to use..

Good luck in whatever you decide,
