Had one of those days....time for a cold or warm stiff one

Tuesday, November 2, 2004 by Essencay | Discussion: WinCustomize Talk

A little history....

Back in the 1870's there were around 5000 breweries in North America. A hundred years later that number was down to a few dozen....read Budweiser, Miller, Coors and the like....not really what I'd call top-notch beer actually swill comes to mind. Today there are over 500 breweries, microbreweries and brewpubs here now, thanks to changes in laws and people's tastes

For the populous that IS of age in their country, what's your beverage of choice to wind you down after having a tough go of a day.

Mine is Redhook ESB or Guinness

For the populous that ISN'T of age or have a different sort of beverage that soothes their nerves or quenches their thirst, I'd like to hear about that too

A nice Chai Latte works here too

Coopers Vintage, or Draught.

BTW....'Fosters' may be the best known....but 'VB' [Victoria Bitter] is by far the most 'popular'.

Oh....and if you want a 'big drink'....a 'Darwin Stubby' will float a sizeable boat....

Southern Comfort & Sprite. Not a big fan of beer.

Though, truth be told, I don't drink much...usually on a weekend when I'm out with friends. A rough day and I just make a fresh pot of coffee or a glass of soda or somethin...hehe.

We share similar tastes, Essencay. I love Redhook (I assume you've visited the brewery in Portsmouth), but I'd say I drink more Guinness than any other beer. My local favorite microbrew is Geary's Pale Ale.

On a trivial note, I once learned that beers like Budweiser, Miller, etc. lost their kick during World War 2 when the majority of beer drinkers in the states were women (as the men were off fighting in Europe and Asia). They began watering it down and brewing with corn to lighten it up. I'm not sure why that was necessary though, my wife enjoys a Guinness or four as much as I do.

Extra Strong Vintage Ale

If fine wine were beer it would no doubt be Coopers Extra Strong Vintage Ale.

This strong ale imparts rich full flavours that are suitable for maturation. Brewed with choice malts and an extended top fermentation, Coopers Extra Strong Vintage Ale will improve with age, becoming more interesting and complex in flavour for up to 18 months. The results are well worth the wait!

7.5% Alc/Vol

Lived in Dover...15mins north of Portsmouth for 20 years before I moved to Dunbarton...near Concord. Portsmouth Downtown...Portsmouth Brewery is a great place for fresh brew and I've been to Redhook a few times too .

To begin my day I drink coffee. During the day, I drink coffee. After a hard day, I drink coffee. After an easy day, I drink coffee. I seldom partake of spirits, maybe once in a couple of blue moons, and one of my favorite drinks is Irish Creme (go figure). When the rare occasion pops up where I want a beer, I like a brew you can only get in Texas, and for the life of me, I can't think of the name right now, but it's a Bock beer, it's quite delicious.   ...... but mostly I luv COFFEE!

I'm well of age, but I don't drink alcohol (or except for special occasions under peer pressure, but I really don't like it). My favorite hot drink is a good Café au Lait (or "Latté", same drink, different latin language), and my favorite cold drink is a good Iced Capuccino.

Oh, yes, Koasati just reminded me, the one alcohol beverage I do enjoy is Bayleys. Yummy. Go figure. Hehehe!

I've had a good 'stiff one' but apparently it doesn't make any difference - I'm still surrounded by idiots...

I need a 'stiffer' drink...

now I rarely drink...cappucino has become my drink of choice(mixed with coffee)

Well one of my favorites is a stiff Bloody Mary. I like Kahula or Whiskey (Jack Daniels) in my coffee sometimes. My favorite beer is New Castle Guinness. But I don't drink very much.

Ahh, good to see so many Guinness partakers here. I'd rate that as my top beverage of choice, after that it's really a toss up as I love to partake in various rare brews (rare for Idaho that is). A few of my favs are:

1. Trois Pistoles ( http://www.ratebeer.com/Ratings/Beer/Beer-Ratings.asp?BeerID=1926 )
2. Old Foghorn (Anchor Brewing in San Francisco - http://www.ratebeer.com/Ratings/Beer/Beer-Ratings.asp?BeerID=4728 )
3. Arrogant Bastard Ale (probably the funniest damn bottle I've ever seen/read - http://www.ratebeer.com/Ratings/Beer/Beer-Ratings.asp?BeerID=1315 )

I think it's a 2 beer night tonight......long day......not to mention my wife's computer decided to 'lose' all its ntuser.dat's so nothing is 'installed' anymore....

Crown lager (Carlton United Breweries) for weekdays, ~three or four a night.

Weekends I like to hit the darker lagers or ales. Dogbolter, produced in Western Australia is a wonderfully full flavoured dark lager. A little pricey due to its' being a 'boutique beer' ...but worth the few extra dollars per sixpack.

...and I'll never pass up an opportunity to drink Guinness, but the locally produced product ain't got a patch on the real thing produced in Ireland. Thankfully, one of the Irish pubs here in my locale imports the real thing.

The downside is that barrelled Guinness does not travel well, so they only import the can with the 'widget'. You have to read the can to ensure it was made in Ireland, because Australia also produces the 'widget' cans, and due to the Aussie water used in the brewing process, the flavour is entirely different.
