New version of StyleXP claims to be able to use encrypted IP themes

Tuesday, July 20, 2004 by MSethWeisberg | Discussion: WinCustomize Talk

Don't know if anyone has seen this yet, but tgtsoft released ver 2.11 on Friday that claims it's icontraslate program can now read IP encrypted themes.

I think that this will get into another lawsuit, just my opinion though.

Mighty Mouse is for Mac only.  Since Cursor XP will never be released for Mac, it's not really taking away any competition, but still they shouldn't do licence the format if they want to use it...

I think its ok that TGT Soft can use IP Themes now, I even created some for them (custom skins in order for TGT Soft).
Style XP is quite good IMHO. I have been running it to try it out and didn't switch back....
It has some futures that WB dasn't offer.
To say that you created an IP theme just for iconpackager so no one else can use it is kind of... well, I just dont feel that way, skinning should be fun and the more people using my skins, the better. If you don't want anyone without a stardock program to use it, then just dont share it. I mean, I just created my wallpapers for windows people so I am going to sue people on a mac that uses my wallpapers. Just dasn't sound right...

No offence, just MHO

Styl skinner.....I  think you ignore the reality of property rights and copyright.

Your being happy with what they may or may not do with your work is well and good....for you.

Reality is that IP themes were intended for a specific use and distribution, and not to be 'extracted' via an alternate system of dubious legality.

Simple example...you accept on upload [perhaps] that your skins be distributed via the occasional WC CD compilation as a fund-raiser.....then you find your works on a pirate copy there-of sold down the flea-market and not financially benefitting the WC site.

Pissed off or what?

What features does stylexp have that WB can't offer?

Feature.....

Since it uses more resources, it can be helpful in convincing your spouse that you need a faster, bigger, better PC

Like the command window?

Anyway, I think intellectual property applies to Stardock inthis case if they try to break th encryption, but I'm not sure it applies to individual IP themes.  When you write a document in Word, you don'r really care if somebody else opens it in Word, Open Office or Word Perfect, but Microsoft may be pissed off though that their own format is getting stolen by others. I must admit I have on occasion converted a few Mac icons to use on my PC.  As long as I don't redistribute them,  I don't think there is anything wrong with that.  Cause IP law applies to distribution. If the IP themes gotten here get to be distributed on another site, now that's another story.

That's different in my mind, Mac programs aren't in direct competition with their counterparts on PCs.

#70 Yes they are, remember mac vs windows... If that isn't competition....

That is competition, but the software developers for each don't really have to compete with each other. If I were to make an image viewer for Windows, an Apple user who would clearly use a different image viewer isn't exactly tapping into my potential market.

I see your point... well then lets just sue every software producer that made his program allow you to import .psd files

I'm pretty sure psd is a public format. As Adobe has went on little crusades before when their Acrobat format was supported by other programs.

Can you give us an example? I can't think of anything that isn't skinned by WB.

Randy...your knuckles will be skinned in frustration using StyleXP with its feeble limitations....so that's something it'll 'skin more'....

, For example, when you are using more programs then your taskbar can handle there will come a scrollbar on your taskbar.
Also if you fix the content margins of the task bar so you will have an extra large taskbar (standard) styleXP is still able to show your running programs on it, on top of each other. (hope I make sence)

There are some small details like a vertical progres bar and all kind of sliders that are skinned. The 'larger' buttons and squares are skinned and there are some more examples like that.

However, stylexp also has some limits, for example it dasn't skin the shut down dialog. (witch I don't really mind as I prefer not to shut down that much )

another thing, for the tabs you can use more then 1 image, for example, top left tab, top right tab, top tab, left tab, etc etc. There are more, just download style builder and see for yourself.

Add all those svchost.exe's onto it (since they are also part of the visual engine. You can turn them off when you are using windowblinds) and you get alot larger number than that.
