TSF - less with the G-mail, more with the icons. Rumour has it DWatson hasn't slept for 2 days . As for G-mail its just another option to be used as the individual considers to be appropriate for them and those they contact - as with all things it will find its level.

Darn - DWatson managed to get his post in first lol

Partly in the spirit of sharing and partly cos I know it winds some folks up terrible like - I can offer a couple of G-mail invites. Of course if you are in the business of overthrowing Governments, gun running or other illegal activities your right to privacy may be superceded for the good of the whole. Those of you approaching 30yrs of age should seek to have your crystal altered or accept as a result of using these accounts you will inevitably be caught by runners and subjected to carousel.

In fairness it is nothing special, presently you can't even set it up as a POP3 or IMAP account, although they do now provide a notifier that sits in your tray if you want it. http://toolbar.google.com/gmail-helper/.

Andy,
I think that I already got thrown on the carousel, but I can't remember if it was any fun or not, but I could use one of those invites. I'm getting ready to move and I'm going to have to drop my Road Runner account soon and a portable account that won't over limit on me would be extremely helpful.

Thanks

also people should know what they are using even if some of you are using it for non-important email. Others will rely on it as a primary source for their email account. People need to know what they are getting themselves into and not be a bunch of blind sheep.

Yeah, I wont put any important email storage on there, Google can pull the plug any time they want, its just for testing (Beta).

Okay, its no good I can't stand it any longer - would someone tell me, that is give me one concrete example or prediction of something terrible that will happen to me as a result of using G-mail. Anything at all that you can predict on the basis of known information that you believe will actually, perceptably and negatively impact my life on a tangible level.

This negative consequence must of course be something that wouldn't happen if G-mail didn't exist. (as I presume its possible to set a POP3 or domain address to forward secretly to a G-mail address it isn't enough to assume that I don't use it either knowingly or otherwise).

This isn't a dig or attack of any kind - although I realise it may come across like that. Its more that for all the negativity and suspicion I have never really seen a tangible consequence that isn't already part of the world we live in.

I'm regretting this already - but it seems to me if there's gonna be an awareness campaign it has to be set in the context of real life as it impacts people on the ground.

The simplest answer always tends to be the right one.

Its a BETA, betas dont always work.

When they start leting anybody join wihout being invited and the service still works then I will have full confidence.
It just feels a little sketchy at the moment, thats all.

Works fine right now, and I really don't care one single iota that a software scans my emails for keywords. Doesn't bother me one bit. Heck, people already use filters on Yahoo and Hotmail to fight spam. What do you think a filter does? It "reads" your emails.  This whole thing is just blown out of proprortion, it's amazing.

I am a privacy issue type of guy myself. I don't feel that using gmail is any different than using google in general. When you search for anything using google, the same thing happens. Your keywords generate a list of advertising links on the right hand side of the search results. Same thing happens when you read your email in gmail.
