Nah, I think if artists would just see the negative comments for what they are negative comments, it'd all be far less stressful. One should be able to properly discern the difference between a "flame" and a constructive criticism. ...

... If I submit something [like a wallpaper, pretty much all I *do* submit hehe...] and I'm confident in my submission, why would I care if some person comes along and slings around ungrounded negative comments? If I'm confident in my work, I don't care what kind of negative feedback I receive, because the only ones I pay attention to are that of the skinners themselves OR if someone wants something specific.

The only reason I think ungrounded comments should be removed is because it might give a bad impression on any newcomers to the site, or just a regular visitor. Comments containing slang, of course, should also be dealt with in the same manner. As forthe negative comment ITSELF, I don't mind any I just take a look at the source instead of letting them get to me.

..my point is, all of you skinners are consistently putting out good work, and ALL of you are still learning... try not to let what others say put a damper on you. If these "trolls" knew any better, they'd submit skins themselves..

PS, I''m in NO WAY condoning "flaming" or such behavior, I just take it differently, I suppose. I know you''re all very skilled, why don''t YOU know it as well?

....but, yes.. I agree, those kind of comments are just senseless and do no good, for anyone.

Lets face it, commenting on all the work is pretty cumbersome. We all get lazy and shorten our comments from time to time. I think Adam is right. Sometimes the short comments dont come across the way they are meant.I know I recently left a brief comment on somebodys work and it didnt go so hot. I didnt think I was being rude, I thought I was doing the right thing. I have realized that I was wrong and I tried to correct the matter. I am just not gonna comment anymore unless I have something valuable to add.

I have gotten a few emails and comments from different people supporting me regarding some negative comments I have recieved. I always look for the positive in a situation. I have found that for each Lover of poo there is 5 equally kind people. At this site there is about 500 kind people to 1 nasty *&@%$.

As hard as it is to overlook the bad comments they do get to you in some way, some how. I was prompted to start this thread after viewing some comments that were left on someones skin. I was outraged. I actually thought that I might attract the scum to myself in hopes they may single me out and give others a break. Heck, I got alot for them to pick on. I see now that it was pretty stupid. Admin has kept a good track of the ugliness but in time they will come back. When they do I will try my best not to feed. It is soooo hard though. Soooooo hard, so so hard. Hard hard hard!

Jafos idea sound pretty good. However it makes me feel good to hear someone say they really like a theme I made. Even if it a crappy skin its still good to know someone enjoyed it and you made them happy but for a brief moment. Even if that brief moment was the pleasure they got from giving you a good comment. Aaaah crap, Im starting to not make sense again. I know this when I cant possibly type as fast as my brain.

Oh and Mgiff, even though I completely understand your desire to be silent, I wish you wouldn't Its just a small form of terrorism and you staying silent only empowers him. With that said, I respect your decision to stay silent.

That was only because I didn't want to get on a rampage. I had started to dread reading my comments because of all this and it affected me. When I get on a roll, I GET ON A ROLL!, so I figured I could be quiet a while and let others voice their opinion. (Thanks though, there really are some good people here)

I think Jafo mentioned perhaps only letting other skinners/contributors post comments? That might a viable option. Although no doubt it must be gratifying to have lots of people oooh and aaah and one's work. And users can spot bugs or issues. Constructive criticism can be quite helpful, although perhaps fellow skinners can provide better insight or assistance when it comes to that. But people just crapping in the comment sections just because they can is another matter.

Geez I've followed this thread and something must of went flying right over my head 'cause if it had smacked me in the head I'd been able to figure out what's going on. MGiff took all her skins down? If the commentary is getting that offensive as to make a respectable skinner remove her skins, then I agree that Jafo's option is the only way to go. Not knowing anything about it, and it isn't my business anyway, I'll make no further comments.

Its an authors right to take their skins down.I would hope it wasn't because of comments. If not every author, then almost every author has had negative, rude or both types of comments. As some admins have said in the past, if your going to post work on a site, grow thick skin. Thats authors with one download to over a million. Not many are exempt. The admins will remove the rude ones.

If all your comments are good and one person craps on you and it falls into the rude catagory, then have an admin look at it. If that person just gives you a negative comment, then look to if they are right. If they are not then forget it. Probably didn't like the color or something. Who knows.

There were only a few of the skin that I was proud of. I plan to start over fresh, trying a totally new style. I had laughed at some of the comments until a couple rang true, then decided it was time to do something different. Believe me, I have a thick skin, being a 911 dispatcher for 9 years doesn't make you weak . If I didn't have any doubts about my work I wouldn't have been so affected by some comments. Hopefully what I come up with in the future will be worth it.

Sure, author''s have that right, of course. But MGiff seemed to have fun with her work and a lot of people appreciated her blinds for firefighters, EMS, etc. I''m sorry to see her take her skins down.

Whoo...she''s back! OK, that''s different if you want to start fresh. Just glad that it''s not a complete disappearance altogether.

Melanie.....this is exactly why I have a low tolerance for dickheads who think they have a right to comment irrespective of whether they actually have a brain or even the slightest inkling of what they are looking at.

What is worse, they will embark on a journey that sees themselves trying to be even more creative with the next 'put down' than they were with the previous....and then enlist a following of  arse-licking yes-men followers to illuminate their genius.

Eventually, through one artifice or another the admins are made aware of the miscreants in our midst and steps are taken.

Step one....respond to obvious problem comments.

Step two...put them on the 'watch list'.

Step three....watch and wait.

Step four...warn.

Step five....silence....via 'Exile' or 'Visitor' status.

Wincustomize.com is a skinning site....for skinners...to display and distribute their skins.

Users of such skins come second.

Commenting on works, as with all interaction with the site is a privilege, NOT a right.

Rights 'may' be inalienable....but privileges can be removed.

Now....I'll post 2 comments in their entirety that caught my eye....and were removed.

These are general examples of considerably more which were much alike, and several were far worse [also removed].

Freaking ugly. What can I say?

In addition, I believe that the skin quality reflects on the creator's appearance in real life. Therefore, I believe that baybboy is a excrement-covered, spotty, diabetic, overweight piece of lard that leaves behind a train of slime when he walks.

embarrassing. Why did you make this skin?

You seem to have made a TON of skins in a few days - they are all REALLY REALLY bad. stop making skins in a day or two by simply taking graphics found on the internet and pasting them together and submitting it as a 'skin.' Seriously, who the f*ck uses this sort of skin? It's bulky and ugly. I don't care if you make bad skins - it is your reputation that suffers, not mine.
by Citizen LoverOFPoo - 4/24/2004 10:56:27 PM

Now, these fine gentlemen, along with Sadaam Insane and Osama Bin Laden  have been 'removed' so further comment will not be happening.  It's notable that their UserIDs are from 1.05 mill to 1.13 mill.....making them 'new', as in this year.

See....I personally couldn't give a toss about these 'users' who are not skinners....not when they indulge in personal attack and insult which results in a fellow skinner removing her works.

IT IS THIS WORK'S REMOVAL THAT REFLECTS POORLY ON THE SITE, not the bunch of 'children' whose status is now between 'exile' and 'visitor'.

This sort of crap has no place on Wincustomize.com.....and won't be tolerated.

Sure, constructive criticism is good....even 'this sucks' is legitimate....but personal attack in particular will see you gone and your feet won't touch the floor.

Melanie.... sanity has been restored with certain comments being removed from your works....if you would like them back up again....[the works, not the comments] let me know and I'll fix it...

Well, I was proud of my firefighter/EMS series, Jet Black and the 'Something Different' one. I can re-upload them after a few tweaks and corrections though. Thank you Jafo, I didn't want to be any trouble or troublemaker, really I'm not a whiner.
I do hope that Baybboy didn't leave, I haven't seen him back on, he's progressing so nicely and I love to see the work as he grows.

I would like to say that I echo everything Jafo has said. I feel exactly the same way as he does. ANY skinner can e-mail me ANYTIME if they receive comments that are unjust or plain rude, and I will get straight on it.

my e-mail is [email protected]
