Who here has had cataract surgery?

Sunday, October 26, 2025 by Chasbo | Discussion: Life, the Universe and Everything

So I'm getting cataract surgery. Right eye tomorrow and left eye next week. I'd love to hear if any of you have had this surgery and what it was like to go through. Did your vision improve? I also have macular degeneration. Wet in my left eye and dry in my right eye. Hell, I'm 73 and I guess it's time to fall apart!

I have an immature one, but no retinal problems yet. I'm amazed you can put together such great screenies and match colors so well since cataracts generally cause refractive and color distortions: Mine does.

During med school I earned my bread doing nursing on an eye ward. Lots has changed since Hippocrates and I worked there, but I can tell you that post surgically for a week (plus/minus) you'll have the treated eye closed, opening it only for drops for about a week. Your vision will be blurry for a week or two depending on how quickly the edema (swelling) of the cornea decreases. Then, glasses...but your vision will definitely improve, Chuck.

Wishing you the best of good luck with a rapid, uncomplicated recovery, bud!

Yes I have had both eyes done, January and the second February.  2023 or 24.  All went well. I still have stigmatism in  my right eye, but I wasn't  about to pay $2.000 extra. I did get glasses so I could see to read.  Just do what they tell you.  There was a no bending, no lifting heavier then a gal. of milk, etc.  All common sense.

You will be fine Chuck. I'll keep you in my prayers.

Same as Teddy but was able to afford the stigmatism repair.

Vision was good as soon as the Eye Patch came off

Cannot speak to macular degeneration

Had both eyes done about 15 years ago. Did not have a problem and all is still good.

I had cataract surgery in 2014 two weeks apart. I got an artificial lens in each eye to replace those clouded by the cataracts. Everything went well.

For the first eye I had a plastic shield taped over my eye area until the next morning. I went back to the eye doctor for it to be removed, then my vision was checked. It was 20 over "some very large number" before surgery. After it was 20/15 and perfectly clear. There were still some "problems".

The cataracts had clouded my vision so I wasn't getting the normal amount of light into my eye. After the surgery, everything was very bright and painful, but I had been provided with dark glasses to avoid the brightness and pain problem.

Everything close was blurred, but I bought some cheap reading glasses as soon as I could to solve that problem.

I had problems at home bumping into things. I soon realized that the amount of light inside didn't make things clear enough for my brain to decide which eye to use. My "old" eye was still cloudy and dim, plus everything was blurred in it. My solution was to make sure all the lights were always on. That seemed to convince my brain to use information from the "new" eye and to ignore everything from the "old" eye.

Finally, my cataracts had a yellow tint, so my brain had adjusted to make the yellow tint seem normal. After the surgery everything had a blue tint.

The surgery on the second eye was the same as the first. After the second eye was fixed, all the problems caused by having two "different" eyes went away. It took about two months for everything adjust to the new "normal", except I still had to use reading glasses for close vision.

Have had both done. I had LASIK done years ago with 20/20 vision. Now I have 20/20 vision again. Went with the Medicare version, so I’m still wearing readers.

the worst part was all the drops every day for three weeks.

I have one just starting. Don't need surgery yet but within the next 5 years. I'm 72 and I expected it. Kinda of runs in the family. Good luck I hope all goes' well for you.

I had a cataract removed in my left eye back in the late 1990's Chuck and they also put a lens in to make my vision in my left eye the same as my right. All went well, and I hope yours does too.

My sister had both done a few weeks ago [with a gap].

The strange thing is she's an artist [eg Archibald Prize finalist] and now she says it's the first time she can 'really' see colour....

Thanks everyone. Going to get the right eye done today. They told me to just wear sun glasses. I have a pair of prescription sun glasses. I hope I can recover in a couple of weeks. The boss at my part time job gave me two weeks. It's janitorial work. I'll report back later.

All the best, Chas! I wish you good luck and good fortune. Both of my parents went through cataract surgery on both eyes, years ago and came through it with flying colors. It was a piece of cake for them. I don't think you have anything to worry about. As for falling apart, I'm only 61 and I can barely walk, and my back is so bad that it hurts me to even pick up a bath towel after showering!

I was back to driving trucks within a week do not think you will have problems with Facilities Maintenance

Just wear what eye protection you normally would if none a cheap pair of safety goggles will do

Nothing in my life is easy anymore. I should say my wife of almost 50 years is rock steady. We are always there for each other. So, the eye institute says that they can't get a fax to go through to my heart doctor to get permission to do the surgery. I think that's a big load of lying crap. Why did they wait until the morning of the surgery to tell me that? Last week I got the fax number to the heart doctor and gave it to the eye institute. I called the heart doctors office and they say that they are getting faxes. I'm supposed to get the left eye next Monday but they are switching it to my right eye. This better be sorted out by then. I've reached out to the heart doctor's office to contact the eye institute. We will see.

The Eye Doctors' staff might have overlooked it, discovering it was missing at the last minute. Fax lines are phone lines and if they're transmitting/receiving other faxes, they can't receive yours. I think they could have solved it by emailing an editable pdf of the consent/consultation form to the Cardiologist office, though. But that's hindsight -always 20/20.

Hope it goes better the second time around, Chuck.

first time she can 'really' see colour....

Many of my patients reported colors being more vivid after cataract surgery.  Not all, but a sizeable number.

Do not remember that but having 20/20 visions with both eyes has helped

Not being able to play Pirate hurts though if I cover my right eye I cannot see eyes at 100 feet if I cover my left eye I see the sweat drops on their foreheads

Just learned I was nearsighted in my left and farsighted in my right have yet to figure out if I am Fear-sighted or Nar-sighted.

Indeed. I believe removing the haze of the cataracts enriches colors much like dehazing in Ps.
