Start 11 v2.5 Taskbar Pinning Issue
Tuesday, January 21, 2025 by SimplexDesigns | Discussion: Stardock Support General
I seem to be having an issue with taskbar pins with start11v2 2.5. When I pin a folder or menu to the taskbar, it does not retain the name of the folder I have selected. It gives it a random number (7) in this case for pinning the downloads folder onto the taskbar through the start11 pin menu. I opened the taskbar pins folder location to verify and as you can see below, it is labeled (7). It should be Office. This is a 100% fresh windows 10 install so I know there are no other softwares that could be conflicting.

Nope, still just numbering them. Like I said, I just reinstalled windows 10 this week with a fresh ISO from Microsofts website, so I know this is not an OS issue.

Just as a test. Please test install in a Sandbox and see if you can see the same issue in there: https://forums.stardock.com/505872/start11-support-faq#windowssandbox

I cannot enable that as it messes with my vmware virtual machines.

Its not installed on a vm, Its on real hardware as in my daily desktop.... I was saying enabling that sandbox break my virtual machines installs. Not related to the taskbar issue. So I cannot enable sandbox mode.

I understand what you're trying to say. that is you enable Sandbox mode, your VM will break. That is why I suggest, you create a new Windows 10 system using your VMware and test Start11 while in that new Windows 10 box.

Turns out it was a edit that allows the file picker to use the modern one rather than the list one. Disabling it allowed them to pin correctly again.
This is what start11 uses for picking a folder

Start11 really should be using this window for selecting folders.

Please forward this to them as a feature request, the small browse for folder is dated and annoying to use. Other modern apps out there use image #2 for most things now.

Strangely, the Browse for Folder work on my system and I believe there are others who also pinned folder taskbar using the same method with no issue. I wonder what differ in your system on Explorer part that make the issue appear in your system.

modern file picker in windhawk. It seems start11 is the only one that does not like that setting, works fine with my other apps. Start11 needs to swap to this modern file picker, its using a dated one that not very user friendly.

Unfortunately it sounds like that tool isn't correctly setting the path returned so we get a blank path hence the number append.
It would be very helpful for future bug reports if you list all the windhawk mods you have applied as they can break things like this.

Just these that are on (plus that modern file picker not shown below). However, start11 should really be using that modern folder picker over the small file list dialog. Please update that picker to use what other apps use when selecting folders. That picker you guys use is a pain to select folders deep into the system. The shortcuts created with the numbers work, just dont name correctly.

This is the Ui that needs updating..

Please update to this type of interface (taken from handbreak folder selection)

Unfortunately those newer style dialogs are not an exact replacement. They do not let you pick recycle bin or control panel for example. These are things customers sometimes want to pick.
We have added in a registry key to make S11 use the newer style dialogs which does not have the issue that tool you used causes. This is optional and due to the above may always remain so. The key to use will be noted in the release notes.

Thanks for requesting this feature. It has been added to 2.5.1.2 as a registry entry.
⦁ Use newer style Folder picker windows
Add a New String Value key and name it S11_UseNewFolderBrowser
set the Value data to 1
Create this new string key in:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Stardock\Start8\Start8.ini\Start8

You can always add Control panel choosing Pin file and navigating to Windows>System32>control.exe

Hello,
Sorry to hear you are having issues. I just tested this on my Windows 10 system V22H2 (OS Build 19045.5371) Pinning the Download Folder via Start11 get me this.
Please try, uninstall Start11, reboot immediately (important), download latest version available in your account product download page: https://store.stardock.com/myaccount/products . Install it, reboot immediately again. Retest it and report back.
Thank you.
