Ive got a small problem...

...with my wireless NIC on our laptop.
After it (the computer) boots up, I plug in the card (it's PCMCIA)...it warms up...then, right after the little speech-bubble saying 'wireless connection found' (or whatever)...the computer freezes...So, I pull the card out and it works...for about 5 seconds.
Then I get WinXp's modified version of the BSoD that says something like , Windows has detected an error, and has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer... It also says something about ndis.sys in the technical info.
It used to be just every couple times or so it did this, but now its invariable, and makes checking email impossible...Or close to it...luckily, Ive got a wired 10/100 Nic that doesnt freeze the comp, but (for various reasons) this is only a temporary solution.
Ive tried re-installing the drivers, but this doesnt help...

funny, during childhood I never had the problem, it started when I was about 18. And came with it a host of other problems that I don't want to remember (my senior year in high school I was barely there). Over all that now

it sounds like a defective card, but I know little in the terms of wireless. It took me 4 hours to get a wireless adapter to work with my 3com card at my parents house. here at my dorm I am treated with a 10meg direct connection. Its kind of sad that I don't want to go home over break to a dsl connection because its so much slower

Go into Administrative Tools/Event Viewer/System and look for a red circle with an X in it, error....
See what it tells you if anything about the NIC, it sounds to me as if your needing an update on the nic driver. NDIS is not being assigned correctly to that specific nic, though it works fine with the wired wired nic...

pull the nic and let me know what revision the nic is, it is part of the serial number
it is the last three chars of the serial number for the nic
like "V.C1" at the end of the serial number string...

Ok...
Do you have a static IP address you've assigned to that DWL-g650 108mbit nic?
If your using DHCP it sounds as if the router is either not allowing the MAC address of that NIC to have a new IP address assigned to it, and/or your laptop is not releasing the slot the nic is inserted into when you pull it and replug it...

and
F/W:2.20 is the revision of the firmware flash burned into the nic...
let me check to see if there is an update for it and also see what it says about not releasing the slot in XP if anything...

yep there is an update...
might have to apply a matching update for the router to the router also....
checking on what it says now about known issues with XP and the older revision...

Due to the fact that you have attempted to install the drivers for the wireless adapter, the device manager might be holding multiple copies of the drivers which might be preventing the drivers from being loaded properly. In order to address the problem, please do the following: Step 1 Access your laptops safe mode. If you have any questions on how to so, please consult your laptop manual. Step 2 Once in safe mode, access the device manager (right-click my computer, left-click properties, left-click on the hardware tab, left-click on device manager). Expand the network adapters category and determine if there are multiple copies of the driver. If so, please uninstall them one by one until they are removed completely. Step 3 Go to control panel, add/remove programs, and uninstall the D_Link configuration utility for the DWL-G650 wireless adapter. Step 4 At this point, restart the laptop and eject the wireless card. Step 5 Make sure that there are no background utilities running such as antivirus, crash guard, or firewall. If so, please disable them. Step 6 Run the installation CD in order to install the drivers for the DWL-G650 wireless adapter. When done, insert the wireless adapter into the laptop. Heres some info from one of the errors...
Your computer was not assigned an address by the network (from the DHCP server) for the network card with the network address 4553547777.
The semaphore timeout period has expired. your computer will try to obtain an address on its own from the network (DHCP) server.

Thats another thing...every now and then, when I put the card in, it says "New PCI device found" even thought Ive installed the drivers...then after I restart or wait a minute or two, it behaves normally...

you have to be using encryption at 128 bit to hit 108 mbit...
open a dos window and type "ipconfig /release" and then "ipconfig /renew" and see if it resets your nic so it functions correctly...

XP doesn't like that unsigned driver much it seems...
I'd do the updates, make sure you read the instructions and follow them to a T...
and then see if you have the same problem, Tech support is going to tell you to do this before they will do a RMA so you will be a jump ahead of them if it comes to that...
though, it is a driver/xp conflict of some sort happening for some reason...
