Tom: XP will run on 128+. It really depends entirely on how many processes you have running in the background that eats up memory....mine runs at approx 550 MB on a re- boot and then slowly builds as time goes on and more gets loaded to memory. As long as you get a handle on the processes even that Lap will run fine

Billy: I show it in SDC....you don't?

BTW: 512 is not a lot of memory in an XP machine......

I disagree. If you are running a new P4 with that hyperthreading technolgy and PC 3200 DDR 512 is more than enough....

Kona...yes....I'm 'fine' with 2 sticks of 512meg 3200 DDR 400fsb in parallel for an 800fsb MoBo.....and highly unlikely to need any more for a 'little while'...

yeah but you have 2 sticks of 512? 1 gig?

overkill.

I was saying that 512 by itself is enough. I only have 192 and i zip along fine on my P3 733 mhz setup.

Kona...it's a four slot board....so eventyally I may add 2 more 1 gig sticks, bringing the total up to 3 gig.....if and when 'bloat-ware' REALLY becomes 'bloat-ware'....

I was just trying to point out that 512 is more than enough IF you have the latest DDR and mobo and prcessor.

I agree with Kona, for most of us 512 is more than enough. I keep my computer up for days i never have any problem at all, it run just like the way it started

For XP, 512 is an ideal minimum...if you actually want to do anything other than just boot the OS....giving you sufficient 'space' to minimise swap-file use, etc.

Since ram, even PC3200 DDR is currently sooooo cheap it's clever to 'overdo it'.  My first PC100 128 meg stick went up to over AUS $400 at one time....a stick of 512 PC3200 put me back $160...quite a difference...

I think I will just boot the OS for now and when I want to do anything other than that I will get more RAM

thats funny. Right now I have 192 mb of RAM installed and out of that I have 107 mb free. I am running XP pro, rainy, OD, WB, IE, and freeram xp.

handles: 5134
Threads: 297
processes: 25

and my cpu is barely hitting 30% usage.

512 can wait, I will stick to 256 or 384 when i can get it. (funds)

Oh and I would like to add, when i fire up the most memory hogging game I have, red alert 2, I still have 50 mb of memory not being used.

Kona....10161 handles...503 threads....44 processes....308 meg in use... cpu at average 3%....

It's about horses for courses...
