Skin Studio Disappeared?

Thursday, November 13, 2003 by WebGizmos | Discussion: WinCustomize Talk

When I first downloaded Stardock Central I had SkinStudio, but now it's gone and I didn't delete it or uninstall it. Does anyone have any idea why this could have happened and how I can get it back?

Yahoo! If you are sure you've been archiving the apps, then right click on WB (within stardock central)and choose "restore existing". This should bring up a dialog box with all your archived apps. Scroll down untill you find the WB version that you want. What kind of problems are you having with WB4.19 anyway?

Luck has nothing to do with it. If you can uninstall your 4.19 version through SDC, which you should be able to do, then you can get you can get the non-beta 4.10 version of windowblinds to install. After you uninstall, close out of SDC and restart it. If you don't see 4.10.010 liste under the Available column next to Windowblinds, look to the lower left pane. Uncheck the box for "Show pre-release versions" 4.10.010 should show up as available and you can install it.

After you do that, I would suggest you go up to the Tools menu and select Settings. On the General Tab, scroll down to the Archiving section, and check the otions you want for Archiving before updating. One caution though if you decide to go back to the beta versions to try again: I wouldn't select the option to Overwrite existing archives if you want to hold on to a baseline version you know works on your system. The downside is a little larger archive, but IMHO that's a small price to pay to hold on to a version that works for you.

ok...just tried to restore WindowBlinds4 adn everything but one file was successfully restored. The file C:\Program Files\Stardock\SDCentral\temp\Base\Blackcomb\activeontop.bm_

failed to restore...restore aborted. Says file not found?

The problem I was having with the 4.19 versions was that I would continuously get a "WBload.exe encountered a problem and has to close" prompt and the app wouldn't open. And it also affected WindowBlinds3.5? as well.

I could be wrong, but I think thats part of one of the default skins "blackcomb" that comes with WB. Activeontop sounds like a button file. If thats all it is then I think WB should still function ok for you.

Ok guys, thanks for all the suggestions. I'm going to go try and get this all straightened out and see what else I can screw up.... Hopefully I'll get this fixed without having to resort to drastic measures and uninstall the whole thing and start over...

Ok Yrag...or Crissy...which ever of you "Oh Wise Ones" wander back to this thread. And you can both laugh since I apparently just fell off the turnip truck here . I tried the archive restore thing and was back to the same problem, so I did an uninstall again, which it seems to have done, but yet says it didn't...go figure...and WindowBlinds3.5 is working again.

So...when you say dump the app...and here's where you can start laughing...can I go to my folder where WindowBlinds4 or 4.19 is stored and delete the folder? Would that "uninstall" it so to speak or does that simply just delete the folder?

The turnip here is obviously not "app savy" so I need a map from mapquest or somewhere to find the right path to remove the problem.

Stephen - The only dumb question is the one you don't ask...nuf said on that.

You can just delete the folder and if your not getting any conflicts (problems) with the version you're running then your Registry is fine and you're go to go

I agree with the only dumb question is the one un-asked....but ya still gotta laugh, cause I laugh at myself all the time . I have a great sense of humor Yrag and there's nothing wrong with laughing with someone, just not at them And thanks for all your input Hopefully I'll get the right folder and get this fixed. So... after I do this will it be possible to reinstall a working version of WB4? or do you think I'd be better off just uninstalling OBDT all together and starting from scratch?

When it's all said and done...you will be better off to un-install all Stardock proggies (including SDC) and then re-boot and re-install SDC and then the other proggies you want. It sounds like a lot of work but it's not and then you know everything is where it should be...well worth the small effort.

Here's where you get a fresh copy of SDC https://www.stardock.com/sdnet_login.asp
