New Object Dock is terrible....

I just got the new object dock and it wont even load. If I right click any object or go to configure dock, it says error, closes and i cna teven see my windows toolbar and I have to reboot. I have uninstalled and reinstalled many times and it still wont work? Anyone know why or have the same problem, the old version worked fine for me but this one just sucks...

When I make Internet Explorer shortcuts, I just make a shortcut with these parameters:

Link: "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\IEXPLORE.EXE" <- Needs quotes.

Arguments: https://www.wincustomize.com <- Whatever url you want it to be.

I tried that but when I wanna open a second instance of internet explorer using that method, it just brings up the internet explorer that I currently have open.

Windows handles memory in a strange way. The more memory you have, the more memory it absorbs. But, Windows XP seems to handle it better than W98.

Scooby, I suggest you get rid of Adaware and get "Spybot Search and Destroy. It's a better Spyware Eliminator by far and free. Those spyware programs can really mess up a system. It seems that you found a few. I'm glad its working for you now. What happens is that spyware programs steal most of your memory, tracking everything you do, and transmit information and even credit card info when you go online. And, when you try to launch one of your programs, and do something that requires more memory, there is no memory left to use. Hence, the program crashes or maybe even your system crashes. Good luck.

i was having prblems with it loading slowly, so far has not crashed...

i added it to my registry for startup instead of linking a shortcut in the startup folder as that seemed to load two instances, thus causing it to crash...

in regards to the speed issue... i installed perfectdisk 6, ran it... boom, speed back... something was messed up... diskkeeper probably did someting wrong...

if you would like the reg key for startup (winxp only) it is here ---> http://www.paulhaskew.com/temp/objectdock.reg after installing, just load up msconfig and check it in on the startup tab....

there probably is an easier way, but this is the only one i found...

I used spybot without knowing what I was doing and destroyed comet cursor and hotbar. Not spybot's prob, it was mine, but be careful. I can't complain 'tho. losing comet cursor led me to Cursor XP, which led me to Wincustomize, then to Object Desktop. The rest is history. I have nearly every program installed, including every beta, all are running concurrently, and my PC is actually running better than before. Used to have a restart problen, not after installing Object Desktop. I have XP Pro, 1300 athlon cpu, 768mb ram, maxtor 160 gig hard drive, and i'm networked to an ME pc, also running every program and doing fine.

As reference...when you use Spybot it gives you the option to save changes and if something goes wrong then you can simply hit the 'restore' last change option and you'll be right back where you were before you deleted anything.

I use both Spybot and adaware, both miss things the other didn't, but they often catch the quarantined files of the other and you have to keep it from fooling with those

Hotbar is a known spyware module. I use to think it was great. That was until I found a file with 500 MB on my computer that was being used by hotbar to track my activity. I think its called hotbar.log I deleted the file and it grew again. Finally, I deleted hotbar and I never looked back.

I think it would be best to let the programmer know of these problems. It might be an easy fix.

Maybe Stardock nad a news group on ObjectDock.

I don't use it myself but I think that is the best way to go to make the program better.

Win98 bleeds all over the place in memory, NT (3,5x,4,2k and xp) has a totally different structure used to deal with memory which partly makes use of some of the UNIX kernal and libraries so you can pretty much be sure it is not bleeding outside the allocated sectors.

Then again you have some screwy apps that puke all over the place in memory for various reasons.

Authorware 6 and down used to have a limit to the swap file size which it determined by looking at the avaiable memory and the size of the swap file. So if you have say 1 gig of memory and a large swap file it would actually give you an error claiming you did not have enough memory installed, neat huh?

mmm, hell I'll stop now before I go into a tail spin and start puking all over the thread with un-allocated thoughts and memories from my second year in school



suffice it to say, Scooby, if your having a problem then you ask for some help but stop before attempting to lay blame on the programmers because you choose to download and install beta software and are not versed in trouble shooting.

Keep it real, ask for help and see if things come about or un-install and stick with *released* software

Spyware protection is just like Virus protection, if you limit your sources of protection you enhance the possibility of aquiring the nasties...

SBS&D and AdAware work together well enough, you just have to make sure one does not eat something of the other....

Any number of Virus software is suggested if you have them...

Run one active and run others as you like after unloading the one you use as standard defense...

least that is my suggestion and opinion for what it is worth

I am literate enough in pcs to understand what not to delete with the spyware programs. I have had them for almost a year and never experienced a problem, but thanks!

Hotbar and Comet Cursor are both spyware. You don't realize how much spyware is in your computer until you get a firewall and it starts going off every 5 minutes because they are trying to send information to each other. I have SpyBot Search and Destroy, Ad-aware and Spywareblaster. I was told to download them from Tech Support Guy because that is what happened to me when I had Norton's Firewall installed on my computer. A lot of spyware can be put into your computer just from pop-ups not to mention downloading, and I have never used Napster or Kazaa. Check out the Security Section of TeckSupportGuy http://forums.techguy.org/index.php?s=c07c8dcc150fa3f15603381ed37c9933 if you want to find out more about it. I started out with SpyBot and I think it is great, I run it about every two days. Spywareblaster keeps things from being put on your machine in the first place or keeps your Browser from being hijacked, just check to see if there are any new updates on them every few days. I just put Ad-aware on last week because it does find some things SpyBot misses, even in your registry. It does find the things Spybot took off and saved in case they were needed. Now to the ObjectDock problems: I couldn't open any of the Url's, by just clicking on them like in the last OD, so I just right click and hit open and it opens them. I am new to OD, I just downloaded it about two weeks ago and I was still learning it when the new one came out. The best new part is the Weather, I was having trouble with that. Now I have to work on docklets. I don't have a clue about Arguments. I have a lot to learn.

I'm having the same problem that Scooby is. Object dock launches fine. Some of the icons work fine. But if I right click on any of them or I try to go to the config icon I immediately get the message that Object Dock has encountered a problem and needs to close. I've tried all sorts of things from reinstalling to messing around with my spyware detectors with no luck. The last thing I remember doing before it crapped out was installing the KKmenu docklet. But I've gotten rid of that and still no luck. I'm running XP Pro SP1, with Geforce FX 5600 if that helps anyone.
