Teenager suspected of authoring Net worm variant
Aug. 28 — The FBI has identified a teenager as the author of a variant of the MSBlaster worm and plans to arrest him early Friday, a U.S. official confirmed Thursday. The variant, called MSBlaster.B, is a slightly altered version of the original worm, which wreaked havoc on Internet users two weeks ago. It’s unclear if the suspect had anything to do with the original MSBlaster worm, the sources said, and identifying this suspect does not resolve the case

A witness reportedly saw the teen testing the infection and called authorities, the official said.

Another source familiar with the investigation told MSNBC.com that a series of subpoenas had been issued in an effort to learn more information about an Internet Relay Chat room where copies of the worm were distributed and altered.
“They were thinking it was funny to do this,” the source said.

Though he isn't the author of the origional code.
The worst of this is, you can freely get the Virus writers IDE on the net. Which allows anyone to create a virus, worm and such without any real knowldge of programming. Drag and drop exploits, what will they think of next...

Anyone feel the parents hold a level of responsibility for his actions taken at home, in their house?
I for one think that there should be something in all of this that the parents far beyond the punishment that their child brought upon him all on his own.
My kid's while at home had a couple of standing rules when it came to any and all of the computers in this house. I *will* go on it at any time I want and I will look and do what I like while on it. This included removing the CPU if warranted in my opinion.
It's simple really, working from home in the business if one of our children had done this on a system in this house, everything computer would be gone and the property of the US Gov. Or name would be black listed and our business would be dead.
Besides the fact that home owners are responsible for the actions of people living in the home for the most part.
I guess this could fall into the gray areas between deciding what is Law and what is Crime.

I don't think it's cool that he hurt so many people...me included...I lost alot of family pictures when I got shut down....and I don't think he ought to get off clean for what he did...there were alot of innocent people...poor people...hurt by him.....
but somehow....

Another question is - from a programming point of view - did he really do something all that clever or did he exploit weaknesses in Windows itself (I expect the latter)?.
So, following on from there, is there a really such a compelling reason for such draconian comments and (ultimately) punishment when we all choose to invest such a lot in an OS with such weaknesses (myself included!).
I think in reality there are very few OSes out there that are mission critical enough to justify such outrage when a security hole is exploited.
I admit to being ill-informed on this case (I'm not all that concerned) but I doubt this was a premeditated move to cause so much disruption - though I'm willing to be corrected
. I suspect it was more a "wow, look what I found - let's release it & see what happens" scenario.
I'd be asking Microsoft tough questions on how come a PFY can so easily cause such a widespread problem?

Let's not lower his punishment because of discrepancy....let's raise the others instead, OK?....

I say really punish him.........make him work with "teddy" on his latest software programme (you all remember teddy don't you??)
