Servers and sites

(Forgive me if this sounds like a stupid question...)
Ok, when you have a website, you typically pay your host a monthly fee for a certain amount of webspace and a certain amount of bandwidth so that you can have a page avaliable to anyone else on the net. And what I was wondering is....Why not just let a home computer be your server and have a broadband internet connection? You could have an ad-free site and it would save money supposing you had a unlimited usage agreement with your ISP. Wouldnt that be possible? Or am I missing something?

Yea Styl.. You better watch that. I was thinking about starting my own web server. I could probably get away with it if I don't have many vistors. But if I manage to get it big and alot of visitors, then It might raise a red flag. Unless they think that your just using one of those downloading programs then you could get away. Until they are told to give their bigger bandwidth users to a company to check on what they use their connection for. Especially if your one person having a 1mb/s connection on their records. By the rules of my agreement, I'm not suppose to have 2 computers on it unless I pay for the second connection. But I have two computers hooked to it. As long as they don't see it. But I doubt you would have problems unless you have massive visitors. They will just think it's a downloading program running all the time.

The fact is when you are running a server it hosts at your ip (XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX) when you buy a site, you set the DNS (Dynamic Name Server) to your IP, and then you are hosting your own site.
I have a broadband connection too, just wondering when they start complaining as I am trasnfering about 100 mb per day to the net
