Disaster!

I'm not liking this too much :(

Saturday, January 5, 2019 by Uvah | Discussion: Windows Discussion

Just as I was uploading a rainmeter skin, after hitting submit, my laptop stopped working and the stop code was Service Exception something. I don't remember all of it, I was in a bit of shock. Then a black screen telling me there is no boot loader. Nada zip zero zilch! How the hell does an upload wipe out my hard drive. Every damn thing is gone!! To say I'm pissed is an understatement. Any ideas, suggestions would be welcome. Please

BTW: I'm back on my old laptop.

Sounds like you hard drive may possibly be going bad Ross. Try booting with the DVD for the operating system that's installed on it and try a system repair. If it fails, your hard drive is probably shot.

I've already pulled the hard drive. Going into the start menu and pressing F10 took me to the HD diagnostic. Did an extensive check which should have taken at least two hours came in less than a minute saying Smart DST not available and Long DST Warning. I knew it was shot by that time. So now I'm shopping for new hard drive. Go figure. Lol

Get an SSD if you can.

Just bought a Samsung 500gb SSD from Newegg and replaced my desktop HD. $83 bucks and the speed is incredible. Boot times went from 25sec to 10sec. I'm thinking of getting another for my laptop.

Gotta go with what my pocket can afford. I found a Western Digital which is what it came with. 500 gig HD @ 7200 rpm. The original was dated 2012, that's seven years old. I went brand new at $50.00 US. We'll see...

Yup, that's good advice.

Yeah, money can be an issue, but if ALMonty got a 500gb SSD for $85, you're likely to be able to pick up a smaller one for less, it's just a matter of shopping around for a good deal.

Shoot!!!  I'd love to be able to pick uo a 500gb SSD in Australia for $85.   My last 512gb SSD drive cost me a tad over $300.

Now that is a good deal and plenty big enough to host an OS and programs, etc.  Now if only I could get those Newegg prices here in Oz.  I scrolled down through the link and saw quite a few great deals, but government taxes here would push those prises up to 3 times as much and more.  Even if I could get Newegg to ship at those prices to me here, I'd end up having to pay import duties, sales tax and GST on top of shipping, thus tripling the overall cost.

Thanks, Gerry Harvey, thanks for nothing.
