Forum update: November 2017
Monday, November 20, 2017 by Frogboy | Discussion: Forum Issues
I have requested the new changes you now see on the site that make the forums cleaner visually.
The next step is to have a lot more data presented when you mouse over an item.
I know some people won't like the changes, but as someone who lives on these forums, I really need the site to be cleaner and quicker to navigate through.

Here is the name you requested Jafo.
It is not the only one.
I found it on a news site.

Bring back bolding of unread posts - much simpler to determine what you have or have not seen as yet. Had the same change happen at another site and the condemnation of that change was deafening.

To tell you the truth when I saw the 'new' forum I didn't think it looked 'cleaner', I thought it was broken - had to refresh the page twice convinced it had not finished loading or something. Then I noticed this thread.
Yes, sometimes less is more, but I don't think this is one of those cases. Did anyone ever complain that the forums looked cluttered?
EDIT: Well, looking at it again, I guess people eventually get used to (almost) everything. ![]()

We are going to add the article post and last responder info back but in a way that that allows it to be a single row.

That was my opinion at first as well. Think I've changed my mind. I like that the new system gives 3 states rather than two. Knowing I've never looked at the thread is helpful info that I don't think the old system ever gave. Glad to hear last poster info is being brought back though!

Does "having read a post" constitute "having participated in?"
Just trying to get the new iconography pinned down.
Thanks.
And I'm coming around on the bolding thing and agree with BSDM.

This is how I think it is working:
No marks at all: Have never made a post in that thread. No tracking of whether or not there are new posts.
Empty box: Have made a post in that thread, no current new posts.
Box with comment bubble: Have made a post in that thread, there are new posts.
So it would seem you have to make a post in the thread to watch it for new postings now. Guess that is one downside as compared to the old system. the old system tracked whether you have read it or not, no matter if you have posted or not.

You should be able to tell if you're read it. There will be a blank icon if you're read it but not responded.

I'm definitely confused now. Seems like the 'no icon at all' threads consist of both threads I have read with no new posts and posts I have never read at all.
edit: I take that back. Decided to try a different website. Seems to be working correctly (i.e. shows the 'empty box' icon for both types) when I am using the GC3 site, but not with the elementalgame.com site.

That seems to be what I'm seeing also. I know for a fact that I had read at least one of the threads that has no new posts and has no icon at all.
Also, the "Subscriptions" button now returns "Egads - the gremlins in the server have stolen the page you were looking for", and one of the threads in the GC3 forums that I started last week does not show from the "My Posts" button, or has been deleted with no notice to me.

Liking the changes implemented today. Getting there.
Now that the cosmetics are coming together, time for direct image upload.

With the new changes this morning everything seems to be functioning correctly at the elementalgame.com site now as well.
Love the new graphics and the hover information!

In the forums account options there are two options that may be useful to many of you:
- Advanced Mode, allows to see more details in the post lists. Brings back the Last Poster information and Views count.
- Auto subscribe to new posts and replies you create - unchecks the subscription options by default when replying or creating new posts. And I just fixed a bug relating to this where the Email option was still check if you has this option disabled.

Autosubscribe option setting seems to work while using the galciv3 site, but not the elemental games site. While using the elemental game site it *always* fills in the boxes, no matter if the setting is checked or not. I did go into options and set them while at each site separately.

Good catch, this was due to a caching issue between the sites.
I've made an update so when you change the properties the data gets refreshed on all the forum sites.

Thanks, much needed to help the website get a fresh coat of paint and looking dated.

I'm now a fan of the changes to the Forum UI, at least on JU which is where I spend my forum time, FWIW.
But I have a further suggestion:
It would be great if there was a way to mark individual threads as "Read" as opposed to having to scroll all the way down to the bottom of the page and "Mark all posts as read".
Whenever a spam post occurs & is then removed from a thread you've commented on, the thread still appears as if there is an unread reply per the icon & bold text in the MyReplies list and the name of the spam poster still appears on the right. The spam post toggles the status of the thread but its removal doesn't 'toggle it back', even if that's been the only interim post in the thread. Going to the now 'missing' reply (cause you don't yet know it was spam) doesn't toggle the thread to 'read' status, which is why the ability to then mark that specific thread as 'read' would be helpful. Automatically 'toggling it back' would, strictly speaking, avoid the need for marking individual threads but might be technically tricky since the status toggle understandably involves interaction with my profile when visiting the page.
Not the biggest of issues, but as long as you're there tinkering...
Thanks for listening.

Yes....what Daiwa said re the delays inherent between spammer removal and eventual forum cache/update...that last poster still being listed is an issue for admins...![]()

Instead of bolding the font we put an icon on the left and we eliminated the display of an icon if it's simply a post you've never participated in before to clean that up.
The two areas we are looking into:
1. Showing the avatar of the person who posted the post
2. Showng the avatar of the last response
Plus, tooltips.
Thanks for the explanation. I get the code now.
