Universal Metal

Wednesday, May 7, 2003 by Aerasin | Discussion: WinCustomize Talk

Hey folks. I was over at www.eqinterface.com, which is a repository for skinning for EverQuest. I spotted an interface that looked uncannily like Universal Metal by Treetog but saw no credit for him there. The thread was closed and I was all but dismissed. You can read it here:

What do you think? Was I way out of line or right on target with what I said?

I've seen a few 'rip' reports on this board but that is the first time I've seen someone 'step up to the plate' and take some responsible action. That is impressive.

Not quite over yet, it seems...

My latest email...

Jim...

The link treetog sent you is to the full suite of skins called 'Universe', which includes a large number of images/works/skins for a large number of different skinnable programs, including...Winamp, ICQ, E-Zpop, Color Pro, and Windowblinds [and others not shown].

However, Pixtudio also created the site skins for Wincustomize.com which shows the exact similarity...I repeat..exact...of the 'gif' and the original site skin.

I'll include a screenshot of the site....Wincustomize.com, with the skin on, as I see it every single day for the last two years plus.

Side by side I will place the gif with a matching window 'table' of the site layout.

Note, I colour picked both the gif and the site skin with PSP6 colour picker of  this screenshot and matched the lighter table square sections to the same colour...RGB 171 171 171.

They are identical.

Colour resolution is diminished with the gif...it's 256 colour, whereas the site skin is true colour, hence the smoother finish.

The colour I refer to is that immediately around the 'WinCust Goodies' graphic...the grey bit that has the price on it.

It's identical to the same area on the gif, as is the lighter section the two squares in the gif...at 181 181 181 which match exactly another part of the site, which uses the same squares, same lines, same everything.

I'll add a small screenie of that as well....just so you are convinced....take note of the areas pointed out in blue...check their 'values' yourself.  I double checked, and the gif image IS 256 colour.

That is the ONLY difference, purely down to the format chosen in the 'save as' option.

I'm really NOT making this up, you know...

Surely this is clear and plain verification of the source of the graphics used to create the work on your site.

Go to Wincustomize.com

Go to 'Edit Account'

Go to 'Themes Manager'

It's called 'UniverseMetal theme'

Surely this is sufficient for you....it's a damn better 'smoking gun' than Bush has found so far...

Cheers,

Paul.

OK...seems like it is all sorted now, and also that Brian aka Drakah, the poster of the work is a responsible person and the 'error' was not his, other than accepting an image to work from without verifying its origin..

Thankyou once again, Brian, and Jim for sorting this out.

Much respect,

Paul Martin

Renato and current distribution,

I thank you and present company for trying to get this all resolved as I am being detained by family matters with the death of a relative. Renato, thank you for the authoritizing of the "Integrated UI - Metallic Version", but it will not be reuploaded (as I had mentioned to Kudane previously) as it already has seen the recycle bin, not only for the now past issue, but I do not believe it should be available to the public after such a misunderstanding. If you want to authorize your work for EQ generally (with letter of statement) then that may be an idea. I do not agree using graphics that were not created by me (unless otherwise noted), in this case I thought I was doing more of a favor by incorporating the sample that was sent along to use within a UI. If I would had known someone took graphics from someplace that was not the author of the submittal, it would had been dealt with from the very beginning of inquiry of use, or not to use it at all - but since I went ahead and did not bother to ask whether or not it was from someplace did not occur at that time since I get submissions almost daily.

I will more than likely reverting a few steps in my workbook prior to the email submittal so I can finish the UI as it was intended to be. In case of interest, the programs I use for filters, spheres, textures come mainly from the PhotoImpact impact program, bounced threw Photoshop, PSP, EyeCandy, sometimes through Bryce, 3DSmax, and other programs, in case you may see something that looks remotely similar. I can I am not "new to the scene" as I have been creating graphics, code, and ever since I learned how to color pixels on a Vic 20 but this situation I have never come to see.

Again, my apologies that something of this nature happened as I would be highly irate if someone was to do the same to my work. In case you are interested, for future submittals I will be asking for a written statement from each individual of pieces that they send along to state the legitimacy of such a part that it was indeed their own so down the road I don't get tagged as "the bad guy".

Good luck to you Renato, the site looks really nice. Always wondered about windowblinds.

Sincerely,

Brian K Haines

Sounds like Drakah is a stand-up kinda guy. Just a misunderstanding and an error in judgement; to be sure not intended to be malicious or plagiarism.

Just goes to show there are always two sides to every story and that things are not always as they seem.

I'm glad to see that all parties involved were able to resolve this matter in a mature and respectful fashion.
