ok - all the comments on Greetings USA are gone. None of them had anything to do with the art and the non-offensive ones were only referring to the offensive ones, so none were appropriate to leave.

Thanks Baker and GM for pointing these out to us. If any others along a similar vein show up, let us know...

I was afraid all morning to open this thread (I saw the numbers changing and thought maybe I was in trouble)! Thanks, DavidK. I had been sitting here giving myself lectures about posting this on the board.

paxx: I'm not seeing the leap in logic in your second point. A work of art is about politics, so criticism of the art is about politics? No, it is about the artistic work.

To criticize the politics of the art is to criticize the artist's politics. Wouldn't that in itself dissuade people from expressing themselves with art? It is like saying "Well, you can post it, but you are gonna have to deal with the abuse *wink wink*"... Or worse, "People will be abusive, so you aren't allowed to upload it."

Who is gonna make policy, the site or the abusive pigs? Insipid people can make a soapbox out of anything, is the art to blame? I have stifled several works because I know the kind of crap I'll get. Wouldn't you consider that a loss? Not as a reflection on the quality of my artwork, but as the loss of a human perspective?

**

I don't think WC is intentionally doing anything wrong.

Thanks for taking care of the 'Greetings' comments, Dave. I just think it would be a mistake to let 'mob rules' prevent people from uploading legitimate expression. Sure, enforce a standard of decency, but let people have the freedom to express what they can within the limits. The issues are with the mob, not the art.

Interesting, while (as we've seen in another thread here) some Hispanics seem to take offense at the USA having "Anerica" in the title since it is not the continent, this fellow doesn't seem to have a clue that Norte America includes Canada. Or perhaps his knowledge of geography is such that he is unaware that there is indeed something and someone north of the US border. Since this comment therefore includes a vile slur against Canadian manhood, I demand that it be deleted immediately. (Maybe that approach will work.)

I think one important point should be made here.

Any racist, inflammatory, extremist, objectionable, abusive, vile, personally attacking, etc., comment existing on this site does so because an admin has not been made aware of it....yet.

The important word is 'yet'.
They can and will be deleted 'promptly', and, depending on severity or extent, so will their maker/s.

Not only is Wincustomize.com a 'family' site, it's intent is that its members can all feel comfortable and happily content in the knowledge that nothing will [or should] confront their sensibilities or those of their grey-haired grandmothers.

I personally think that if a skin or wall submitted for inclusion 'happens' to include a social or political comment then any follow up discussion of the 'message' would be better placed to be in this forum, and leave the skin-comments for the 'skin', not for a dissertstion on the moral turpitude of global conflict/ whatever...

Again, just a reminder...if and when you come across 'questionable' comments on a work, just contact an admin...post a link....it'll be dealt with...

I think he was talking about someone else, not f***ub***h guy. We were wondering if the above mentioned person was exiled.

My view is that when somebody makes a political wallpaper or logon, he is not just making art, he is saying something.
Making a wallpaper that means that "War sucks" is no different than actually saying "War sucks". Understand? Therefore, in my view, when you raise an issue, when you make a statement like that, you have to expect, if not welcome people to post their reactions to it.
I agree 100% that some of the best artworks/movies/books have a political or social message in it. But those art works also always bring comments about the political statement they vehicle. As a matter of fact, the artist most of the time, specifically made those statement BECAUSE he wanted to stir some controversy and bring some thoughts on a specific topic.
I've seen artworks of aborted feotuses in Art exhibitions, and whether you want it or not, after seeing that kind of painting, you're not likely to talk about the choice of colours in the artwork, or the nice use of lights or the technique of the paint strokes. No, most likely after seeing that painting your going to comment of abortion. This is just an example to show that the artisit when making and making public a work of art that makes a political or social statement is actually raising an issue that he should expect or welcome to get a reaction from.

I think the problem is that you are confusing criticism with conversation.

a) "he is not just making art, he is saying something"

Actually, no. He is making something that means something. He said nothing to you, nor did his ask your opinion. This seems nit-picky, but it will makes sense in a second.

But those art works also always bring comments about the political statement they vehicle.

True, which leads to your next point:

c) No, most likely after seeing that painting your going to comment of abortion

ah, okay, so this leaves us where we are at here at WC.

Even if another visitor challenges your ideas in a museum, you aren't gonna argue there. If you start a rant-fest, they ask you to leave, since you are spoiling the artists venue and the place for the other visitors. No different than a street-corner preacher setting up shop in a library. The place is not about you.

**

SO... the critic writes an objective review. If you pour your criticism full of subjective rant about the *subject* the artist was talking about, then you have failed as a critic. Sure, you might say the artist didn't balance their glorification of war with any of the horrors, but you wouldn't list a half page of those omissions in all-caps. No one is saying you can't be tough on the work, but you aren't there to preach your cause. Criticism, itself is an art.

If you are not a critic, you go stop in at a bar and mention it, and the guy next to you says you are an idiot and you argue about it. You are now in a conversational, public area designed for interaction. If someone is too fragile for an argument, they don't go there.

**

So that leaves us where we are at WC. The artist didn't *say* anything to you, and it would be vain to think he cares what you think of the overall subject. It would certainly be officious and rude to stand in front of his item and try to tell the world how wrong he is.

Granted, if you bump into him at the bar, feel free to let him have it...
