Windows 10 and Microsoft Accounts

Desktop Linking

Thursday, May 26, 2016 by BigDogBigFeet | Discussion: Windows Discussion

My wife's Microsoft Account is somehow screwed up.  I think it got hacked.

Windows 10 when you first set it up prompts the user to login with their Microsoft Account.  Doing so establishes your Windows 10 Desktop to appear the same.  So, if your are on you Laptop your Desktop Screen will be the same across devices.

My wife's account places a couple of desktop.ini files on the desktop which of course auto-load and run at startup.  The effect of it is to cause repeated Blue Screen reboots on our HP Laptop (I think) and on our brand new Dell Laptop it is causing the keyboard to be locked out.  She cannot type anything in her account.

We just got it tonight, (a second try by the way) and the exact same issue occurred.  So, two brand new Dell Laptops and they both have the same behavior but only on her account.  My account is fine.  I had to use the on-screen keyboard to work with her account.

Anyone have any ideas how to reset her Microsoft Account to default settings?

Do I need to contact Microsoft about this it is a Hotmail email account she uses?

Help please.  We need it for this one.-

I does sound as if your wife's account may have been compromised, and yes, I believe you should contact MS support to get help with resolving this issue.

Alternatively, your wife could create a new MS account to see if she can operate the laptop using different credentials.  If she can then there is a likelihood that her old account has been hacked.  However, I would still report it to MS as it may assist in combatting this kind of cyber crime.

Good luck with it.

Well so far we started her a new Microsoft Account after having to do a full restore on her new Laptop computer.

That has her working again will do the same on her other Laptop when it gets back from HP repair.

Turn off syncing in settings.

I can solve the problem with the new account and I feel safer.  Her old Laptop has photos on it she needs.  That's the challenge.
