Having trouble copying cds

I know this isn't Stardock related but I figured someone could help...
I'm using Easy CD Creator 5.3.4.21 and I just got a BUSlink 52X drive yesterday. My other one is a Yamaha 8X.
When I go to copy a cd and it reads from the Yamaha and burns to the new one, after like 30 seconds the buffer level drops to 1%. If the cd is 12 tracks, the buffer level will go back to 100% on like the 11th track.
But if it reads from the new one and burns to the Yamaha, the buffer level stays at 100% (testing same cd).
Burning to the Yamaha I burn it at 8X and burning to the new one I burned it at 16X and then 12X (the Yamaha reads at 24X).
The cd sounds fine though...what the hell is up?

My best guess is that the 8x is unable to feed the data fast enough for the higher speed drive.

Well yeah werewolf, if I do it the other way around it works (burning to the Yamaha at 8X). But why would that work and not the other way around? I was under the impression if the Yamaha can read at 24X, then burning to the new drive I should be able to burn up to 24X.
And that goes with your response jebland. Is that not the way it works?
I mean, when reading from the Yamaha and burning to the BUSlink, although the buffer level is for the most part at 1%, the cd sounds fine. Don't think I should keep burning like that.

As long as it's working, 1% is ok. What's happening, I think, is that the BL is getting rid of the data (burning the cd) faster than the yamaha can get it out.

Hmmm, well someone was mentioning about the drives being on the same IDE channel. Don't think that is the problem.
I have a 52X reader and will replace the Yamaha and see what happens.

I replaced the Yamaha with a LG 32X10X40X drive. I first tried copying at 24X and again the buffer level dropped to 1%. After, I tried 16X and for the most part it stayed at 100%.
Like I said, I was under the impression that you could burn as fast as the other drive could read. Guess that's not the case...16X is fine though.

DJ, have you tried NERO burning rom? I had Easy CD creator that came with my external CD burner and I ended up with buko $$ worth of coasters. 
Finally I got desperate and went out and purchased NERO and now I NEVER make a single coaster! Cwazy! 
Anyhoo, just a thought.

I've seen problems with both CD drives (reader and burner) on the same IDE. It has to do with the bus rather than the drives. Try them on different IDE's and see if it stops.

Shmoopy, my brother has an AMD Athlon 2200 and experiences no problems. He does use Nero now (no problems with Roxio before).
I've never had a coaster with Roxio either. Might try Nero though.
Vizo, yeah I mentioned that above. That slows down your drive though if it's on the master. My brother has his on the same (99% sure) like me and all is fine. Will make sure.
You think it could possibly be because I'm on a 750 AMD? I mean now I can burn up to 16X replacing the Yamaha...

the media (cd) rating decides upon the speed you can burn at without errors
Windows XP CD burning functions works well, but it can be a pain also...
Anytime you copy a file(s) to or from a drive, it adds them to the burn cache and keeps telling you that you have files to burn to cd

Open your whole cd in the media player, or load your files in there, and then say: copy to cd...
Ectualy I shouln't be helping you, cause I'm sure you are awere of it that copying cd's is illegal.

Ok, from what I know now, you can write as fast as the other drive can extract the audio when copying an audio cd. With a data copy, you can copy as fast as the other can read.
I can copy an audio cd at 16X (give or take some) and that's fine.
Styl skinner, I record a lot of stuff on the 1s and 2s and like to make backups. I also give copies to other DJs and people who want them.
If you really get into it, some labels are for DJs making tapes/cds and giving or even selling them. If you put all mainstream stuff on there well then you're really not helping the music industry. Other then that, you could hear a song, really like it and decide to but the album. It has been said that these tapes/cds increase sales.
I'm not arguing with you because for the most part you're right. Just telling how there is another side and I'm not making copies of say Photoshop and/or full albums and giving the out

Nah, this topic was up before. The mixes I make don't even have the full songs because they're blended. It's not like I'm distributing them massively either. Most are backups for me.
Every single DJ (if not 99%) does it and that's to be expected.
