DeskScapes stopped working

Sunday, December 27, 2015 by gevansmd | Discussion: Animated Wallpapers

Since upgrading to Windows 10/DeskScapes 8.5, my CPU has been clobbered whenever a dream is running.  I thought I'd try a software reinstall.  I uninstalled DeskScapes, rebooted and reinstalled and rebooted again.  Now I can't apply any dreams to the desktop.  The configuration program shows the chosen dream running in preview but clicking the apply button simply turns the desktop black.  Ditto if I double-click on a dream or right-click and choose Set as background image.  Oddly, although it won't apply standard dreans, the configuration program will apply static wallpapers, dynamic dreams and video formats.

When I had 8.5 running with W7 I had lost the ability to double-click on a dream but that began working again with W10.  I can see the DS Host Application running in the Task Manager but using 0% CPU.  The configuration program is grabbing nearly 50% when it runs, which would be fine it would apply a dream.

Did you try installing codecs?

I had to install K-Lite codec pack Mega.

I run Windows 10 with Deskscapes 8.5 with K Lite Full codec pk, all works as it should,

and I run of course everyone of my Dreams and with low CPU usage.

There must be something else causing your problems.

Did you do an upgrade with windows 10 over 7 ?

You might have a codec problem too.

Maybe you should start over and do a Fresh Install with Windows 10

and re-install all your needed programs , starting with Deskscapes ?

Then as you install each program  you can check that Deskscapes is

still working as it should.

Maybe you have program / or virus conflicts causing your problems

and higher CPU use than you should have.

Yes that's a lot to re-install everything but all should be right after.

You seem to be the only one with this problem, nobody else has

mentioned it .

Just my thought.

I'm using K-Lite codec pack 11.80 full.  I'll look for the Mega pack.

I don't have weeks to get my PC back to running order.  That's what a fresh install would entail.  By the way, there is at least one other person who posted about DS 8.5 having problems on W10.  I can't find his post to see if he ever resolved it.

Update:  I uninstalled K-Lite Full and installed the Mega pack.  The problem became worse.  I uninstalled K-Lite completely and the problem seems to have gone away, including, the runaway CPU.  Seems my update from K-Lite 8.x to 11.8 may have trashed the codecs.  That happened shortly before my update to W10.

I spoke too soon!  The runaway DS Host is still happening, depending on the dream.  Most recent dreams I've downloaded consume nearly 25% of CPU, combined with another 20% load added to Windows Explorer.  Pausing a dream reduces CPU from 99-100% to under 50%.  Going to try installing the codec pack again.
