More '80s Movie Remakes Coming - Can We Please Stop This?

Tuesday, May 6, 2014 by Island Dog | Discussion: Life, the Universe and Everything

I read a list of more '80s movies being remade, and I just need to make it clear that this needs to stop.  So many of these are great movies that just need to be left alone, and not remade with some mediocre actors.

Couple of examples:

  • Escape from New York
  • Fletch
  • The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad!
  • Wargames

If Holywood can sucker everybody into paying for poorly remade half-assed reproductions then shame on y'all.

I hear Amazing Spiderman 2 is doing amazingly well in theaters

Not a fan of spider man.  They filmed one of the scenes in downtown <my city>, snarled traffic horribly, etc.  But the wonder and amazement is gone from spidey.  Sad....

Yeah it's crap, Sony tried to rip off whatever the producers think is "The Marvel Movie Formula" and failed.

I'm more interested in the big guy's latest outing...

I have full faith that they will do better job this time, versus the Matthew Broderick version!

Just (finally) watched Pacific Rim on DVD.  It was better than I was expecting.

Pacific rim was pretty good for a mech movie.

I would have liked to see them utilize more weaponry over the hand to hand combat, as typically it seemed they needed to win the battle using weapons anyways. But all in all a decent flik..

Guillermo's logic as to why the Jaegers weren't packing Mondo weapons (in the DVD extra stuff) was that conventional weaponry (bombs, cannons and such) caused too much collateral damage to the populace, so the 'logic' was to focus on more brute force/melee approaches, where you didn't have random heavy cannon fire and such taking out buildings, peeps and such.

I'm still more from the Battletech/Robotech school of mecha, but nonetheless Guillermo did put a lot of love into Pacific Rim and it shows.

Amen! This PISSES me off royally. Morons can't be original & make their own damn movies, because they don't have a damn creative bone in their body, so they keep remaking movies that were perfect and should NEVER be remade, especially so soon. It's offensive, it's stupid & they all suck & they ruin them! I was pissed enough when they remade Hairspray, mostly because John Waters is one of my favorite directors, but also because it was perfect how it was & they ruined everything good about it. Plus, then all these dumb kids see the new versions of these old great movies & they love them & not only act like it's great, but seriously think you're talking about those pile of crap new movies (if you can call them a "movie", pfft) instead of the good original. I swear, even some of the worst 80's/90's movies were better than most of the crap they make today. It infuriates me enough that they have no creativity in the TV industry now & keep remaking amazingly good British TV shows, here in the US & absolutely destroying everything good about them, even though they were already in english & never needed remaking in the first place, then they have the audacity to sit around and call the original the title+UK at the end, as if ours is the original. That's just bull. Then people want to harass & incarcerate people who download movies or shows, but they allow this kind of stuff...it blows my mind. I feel like that's the worst act of copyright infringement ever, even if the original creator said it was OK, they only did it for money & they're allowing people to completely destroy a wonderful piece of artwork. Sad times. We need more Scorceses & Lynch's & Waters & Coppolas etc. They know how to make something amazing. Especially Scorcese.

BTW How the HELL DARE THEY REMAKE ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK?! THERE'S ONLY ONE SNAKE PLISSKIN! (and Naked Gun without Leslie Neilson, are you fucking kidding me?!) This offends me to my core. These people are the bane of my existence. You don't steal other people's work just because you suck too much to come up with shit yourself. You just don't. There should be a law preventing this kind of crap. It's absolute garbage & it's an absolute destruction of the epic things.
