So I've Started On a New Build
that's not only sexy but kicks major ass
Friday, February 7, 2014 by starkers | Discussion: Personal Computing
Yup, it's that time of year again, but this time it's not a PC upgrade but rather a complete new build... starting with a real sexy case...

Now this is a full tower and has oodles of room inside for lots of fantastic shit... accommodating extra big graphics cards, enormous CPU coolers and even a magical leprechaun who can fix stuff when it's broken. Orright, maybe not the leprechaun, but it is fechin' huge inside. And what's more, to make it even more fancy, it has keys to get into it... so nobody's stealing my graphics card in a hurry... the innards of the beasty are quite secure.
Orright, so maybe it's not that secure, but there are lots of things to like about this case. For example, the 'hot swap' hard drive bays and the 'daisy chained' power connecters so that only one SATA plug from the PSU is required. Then there's the great ventilation, easy access to everything and the sexiest appearance ever.
Anyhow, enough of all that, let's talk about the innards...
PSU.... Silverstone 1200w 80 Gold
Mobo.... Gigabyte GA-Z87X-UD5H [has 10 SATA 3 ports and 10 USB3 ports]
CPU.... Intel i7 4770K @ 3.5ghz [but highly overclockable]
Cooler... Corsair H60 Liquid CPU Cooler.
RAM... G-Skill Trident DDR3 2400mhz x 32GB
SSD... Samsung 840 Evo series 512Gb
GPU... Gigabyte Radeon 7970 GV-R797WF3- 3GD.
Well that's all I got in it for now, but it has been a long, hard day and I've had enough, it's bedtime and the rest will have to wait 'til tomorrow.

Things are looking up....I'm about halfway through the config of a new OS install....even got FSX to run without installing it first [and then adding 200gig of aircraft, etc]. I think all I really need to do now is get into the old OS...update my mail dls and then get back into the new one and import the psd.
Catching up to 5 years of 'tweaks' is a bit of a pain though....
Good to hear things are going well/better... and hopefully that boot issue isn't being a PITA. When reading further into M2 drives last night I saw that some models do not boot an OS at all, which seems somewhat odd to me. I mean, why would you invest so much in a non-bootable drive? I thought the idea was to harness the additional speed to enable faster OS operations, etc.
I know what you mean about setting everything up to the way you like, not that I've ever had 5 years of tweaks to contend with. However, I have had to redo clean installs with all the tweaks and programs, and sometimes that is the most time consuming part of a new build. I recall doing a new build in my first Thermaltake case that took just over an hour, and setting up the OS and proggies taking the next couple of days That's why I invested in the higher version of True Image, so save myself the time and frustration of getting it just right.
Anyway, my M2 drive and adapter order has been processed and will ship today. It will be arriving by regular Parcel Post so I should see it either on Wednesday or Thursday.... then the fun begins.

Ram City is quick....as quick as the ram....![]()
I got a call from them on the Monday morning...to check I was a real person [I was] and the M.2 arrived the next morning [Tuesday] ...all the way from the sunny Deep North...![]()
Reason for the reinstall [after already doing the dissimilar True Image ver] is that I wasn't confident I hadn't imported a whole bunch of issues re drive type... BIOS type [as well as hardware itself]. This is more than just a generational change from one OS to another...where the BIOS is same... IDE/SATA is the same...etc.
Doing it 'cold' means everything can be done as intended.
At the moment I have a few ASUS error popups re GPU [not the bug-free installers you'd expect] and 2 desktop icons refuse to be what they are supposed to be...in spite of a cache delete/rebuild...so more to look into there...
I'm particularly looking forward to the moment I can delete all the precautionary backups prior to the install....there are probably around 500gig of them...![]()

I had the New Year 'interruption' so my order was processed just today, so yeah, that's quick for their first day back. My package ships this afternoon... but I received no phone call checking into my biological status.... and I might not be.

It may be as I said: the different BIOS types, and whether some system files can operate under a different version. Given the circumstances, I believe you did the best thing when opting for a clean install. A repair may have fixed those broken files, but you would have had a half decade's worth of junk gunking things up, and on a new machine that's not exactly desirable.

Not sure what the ASUS popups are about - my current GPU being a Gigabyte - but I had a similar desktop icon issue a while back... though I can explain what happened, not why. In my case the desktop icon [a shortcut] kept reverting to an image that was not defined by the parent in the program folder. While the shortcut was set by Adobe Photoshop Elements during the installation, the desktop icon was nothing like the one provided by Adobe. Nothing I did would fix it, so in the end I deleted in, imported the one from the program folder to the desktop and rename it 'Elements'. That solved my dilemma but I'm none the wiser as to what its cause was.

I can see the case is a Thermaltake. Which model? And I may have missed it but how much did the system cost to build, if I may ask. I am alos upgrading my system in 2015 and am going with more modest specs, 16 gb RAM, Athlon 4 ghz CPU and keeping all my existing drives and video card, case and PSU. Even at that with a motherboard I am looking at nearly $400.

It's a Level 10 Limited Edition Titanium.
Total system cost [without proggies/OS, etc] is $7037 AUD.
The case alone was $1299....![]()

BTW, I meant Thermaltake. I have one of their cases but it didn't cost $1299, probably under US$200. I don't know the exchange rate to make a proper price comparison.

Will you shut up about your $1300 case already.
I may have developed a slightly greenish tinge of late, but I'm not fechen jealous.
Besides, when I get my Cosmos II it'll be betterer.

Taken just about all day.... trying too many shortcuts that weren't .... but I now have FSX up and running [it originally wouldn't activate] with all the aircraft on. Hassle was/is that a lot of stuff is installed INTO FSX....much the same as what happens with other proggies into the OS.
AND there's a required sequence to follow....![]()
So, 200gig of x-amount of years of 'fiddling' is back up and running happily.
Any other game/proggy is a doddle in comparison...but I have a few more of those to go.
Did a BIOS upgrade which may have helped booting ...though haven't yet bothered/needed to boot into the first OS/Drive again....yet.
Now 'skin/modding' wise... I do have Fences on .... not sure if I'll add the Dock yet... but needless to say I'll be adding WB ...![]()

There was a mention in those forums of major board manufacturers including a fix for boot issues in the next round of firmware. With a bit of luck you got it.

What, you haven't done that already? After posting Malware/Spyware sentries, WB is the very next proggie to be installed... then IP; CursorFX; Fences; Winstep Xtreme and those Stardock proggies developed for Win 8. Once that is done and skins have been applied I then install Firefox and all my AV [audio/video] proggies... and so on.
Since I extricated my big beasty from storage I've been meaning to have a dabble with the Win 10 preview. Thing is, I keep getting distracted in one way or another and just seem to lose direction on that one. Maybe tomorrow after I've sorted out a few things, cos really, Win 10 may just be the OS that goes on my new machine when done, and I should probably get acquainted prior to its completion.

Almost have a full system up and running perfectly.
Interestingly...the WEI failure is due to it not recognizing/handling DDR4. I even ran it on a VM....and that failed as well...so it's definitely hardware.
I've started the task of deleting many of the backups-of-backups that were done 'just in case' things got wobbly... and the real indicator of confidence will be the deletion of the original install drive that was the dissimilar image restore from the old machine.
Then to 're-skin' my Sysmetrix...so it can show 8 drives, not 6.... and see if I can 'export' some old settings for Object Dock...and Chrome.
There's still a bunch of games to reinstall...but they're a doddle compared to FSX....![]()

Yes, new hardware can present problems for monitoring/system assessment tools... and being DDR4 is quite new, many of those tools would not have been updated as yet. I don't know that MS will ever update WEI due it it being ditched with Win 8.1, with seemingly no intention of reintroducing it in later editions. WEI isn't an issue for me as I run Win 8.1 on all my Windows machines, and probably Win 10 later in the year. I do have an [non-interned connected] XP box set up for older games that don't like anything much after Vista, but XP was never WEI enabled anyway.
In other news, my M.2 drive and adapter should arrive today. I just checked the tracking number and it was received at Startrack Brisbane yesterday and is onboard for delivery this morning., which is really good, having come from Melbourne. Items coming from my regular supplier can take 2 days once the order is processed and lodged with a local courier, and it only has to come about 30km up the Ipswich motorway. I blame the couriers for that though.... parcels can sit up to a day in their depot awaiting loading to a delivery truck.
Oh well, so long as it arrives.... and not too fechen late.
Anyway, I'm getting ads on every WC page while signed in, so I need to sign out and back in again after clearing my cookies to see if I can resolve it. I do use Adblock Pro but it and others blockers are disabled for Stardock and WC, so I don't believe those are responsible... though stranger things have happened. Like Bichur and his throbber.
Ah, the good lold days, when WC was absolutely brimming with [now sadly departed] characters who helped make the forums a lively and interesting place to visit.

Well I did that... still getting ads. GRRRR!!!
So it's back to investigating the reason cos I hate fechen ads.

Ram City is in Queensland ....
Okay, then, it's true what they say. You learn something new every day..
Oh well, my quota is filled for the next 24 hours.
On another note, I've not been able to get rid of the fechen ads any other way so I've enabled AdBlockPro for now. It messes with the front page and I can't see the skin pics, not that it's a problem. If I want to check out skins I can simply go the the galleries... and the inconvenience is worth it for not having to see damned blasted ads.
Anyway, my package will be here shortly and 'll have a new toy to play with.

Well it's here... has been for around 4 hours, but I've not gotten around to installing it yet because Shaunna and Bianca are off to Tassie tomorrow and I've been copying pics and video over to Bianca's laptop to show friends and rellies.
So yeah, what a mongrel of a job installing the M.2 on the PCIe adapter. I tried umpteen ways to use the screw and keeper provided, but no way was i going to fasten down the M.2. Sure, the screw is long enough without the M,2 in place, but not when it is.. Fortunately I keep a variety of screws for computer work and I had what was really required. Still, I won't be cracking open the beastie tonight to install the new tech. It's only 6.05pm, but I've had a long busy day and I'll be heading off to bed for an early night in the next hour or so.

Test data on my M.2 .
Show off!
I don't know that I'll see quite those speeds via the PCIe mounting, though there will be a significant improvement over the SATA mounted drives... that's when I get the OS installed. The M.2 is in the case and has been recognised by the BIOS and current OS, so it's ready to go, it just that thus far I've not been having a good day with vertigo and nausea. Hopefully the meds 'll kick in soon and I can go about my day feeling a little more productive.
I should have a relatively better time of it than you with regard to cloning over my OS, given that it's essentially the same machine, just different hardware to house the OS. In the past I've been able to clone the OS to another drive without having to reactivate Windows, not that I've done it with an M.2 before, but the 'dissimilar hardware' option is available should it be required.
On a different note, I saw on the news last night that Melbourne had a massive storm and quite alot of damage was done to property. Hopefully all is right with you and yours.... like you still have an intact roof, etc, and your new beastie [and other stuff] isn't exposed to the elements.
