Windows Phone App Thread
Tuesday, November 26, 2013 by Island Dog | Discussion: Personal Computing
Since quite a few of us here have Windows Phones, including myself, I thought we could keep an ongoing thread where we can talk about new and useful apps for the platform.
If you have a Windows Phone, you can grab apps from the Store app itself, or through your browser at the Windows Phone Marketplace.
I'll be talking about my favorite apps, and please feel free to join in.

For those of us running the Windows Phone 8.1 Dev Preview just a heads up!
There is an update (fairly small) bringing the current build to (8.10.12393.890)

Well I scored me a second Lumia 820 over the weekend - Shaunna updated to a Samsung Galaxy Note S5 for a bigger screen - and I got her old Nokia to use. I got it unlocked as it was out of contract and switched provider from Vodaphone to Telstra, which is my home phone and internet provider, and now I can access all my account details and etc while I'm out and about using apps and the phone service pages.
Anyway, I've updated with the Developer preview and am in the process of installing the subsequent updates before re-adding my apps since I reset the phone to delete Shaunna's apps, data and details to add my own. I'm loving this developer preview right now, I no sooner finish adding one update and it is automatically searching for, downloading and preparing to install the next. I don't recall my other phone doing that prior to the 8.1 preview.
Got one Windows 8.1 update to do and then I'm off to the Store to add my apps to this phone, which will likely become my primary phone because it is linked across the network to my other telco accounts.
Personally, I wouldn't have gone with the Samsung Galaxy for a bigger screen.... being an Android device. My choice would have been the Nokia Lumia 1520.

Yup, just got it from the store. I have an earlier copy of Photoshop on my other phone, which I will have to update shortly.
I also put a 64gb memory card in my main phone to store my media files, thus leaving more room in the phone's memory for apps, etc. Beats me why the Lumia 820 wasn't as popular as other models, why people didn't like it, because mine have served me well and are more expandable [memory-wise] than some models, above as well as below it.
And to think, just a couple of years ago I wouldn't have had a smart phone with all these luxuries and benefits above and beyond call making and texts, and now I'm right into it. Nope, I didn't need all that extra 'rubbish', now I wouldn't be without it.

Video Tuner is a new app from Microsoft. It lets you edit video right on your Window Phone.

Live Lock Screen Beta from Microsoft was finally released last week. This app lets you choose between new lock screen layouts and allows some customization with the lock screen wallpapers used.

Live Lock Screen Beta from Microsoft was finally released last week.
How does this compare to or interact with the existing Nokia GLANCE screen etc.? Or is this just meant to replace the existing 'lockscreen' (I have mine set to bing at the moment).
Thanks for any clarification.

It's a separate app so I don't think it interacts at all with it. This app lets you select multiple wallpapers to change at selected intervals if you want. It can also pull from Bing images.

I have had an app udate that has borked my ability to add, edit or deletc contacts.
Before when I went to my contacts page I could enter the person's name phone number and other contact details, now I just get option to add or edit accounts of my own, which is useless to me because I have a list of new contacts I cannot add to my phone.
One explanation I've been offered is the retirement of the old Skype and its useless successor, that it now handles contact details, etc. However, that's not what I signed up for. I don't want Skype or anything like it handling my contacts list. I just want to be able to tap my 'People' tile on the front page, get up a page where I can add contact details and simply close it once the relevant details are recorded.
Now what I get is a page offering me options to create Google, Facebook and Twitter type accounts, none of which I want. Worse still, if the update to Skype is responsible, I cannot uninstall it because I get a warning saying that I may render the phone inoperable should I continue. Like WTF, I've never used Skype, never wanted it and sure as hell didn't install it of my own volition... and now I have to have it like it or not?
I've searched high and low to find a way to manage my contacts, but alas, it seems to have disappeared with the arrival of this new Skype POS

one of the first things i do is uninstall skype after i do a hard reset. uninstalling it won't hinder the operation of the phone at all. as to the issue with your contacts, i've never heard of that one.
what os are you using, 8.0 or 8.1? i had numerous issues after updating to 8.1. even after doing a hard reset and restoring, i had the issues. only after a hard reset and setting the phone up as a new device, did my 1520 operate correctly. maybe that is your corrective action, starkers. don't call nokia. their tech support is rather worthless, in my opinion.
regarding that lock screen app, ID posted about, it'll be a nice app once the bugs are worked out. with it installed, i kept getting "resume" or "loading" screens after swiping up on the lock screen before the start screen would appear. most imes it was just a few seconds before the start screen would talk to me but every now and then it would take close to two minutes for the "loading" dialog to disappear and then the phone would reboot. i tried the 'kids corner' fix but it didn't help so i removed the app and everything is back top normal.
