Where have all the Windowblinds Master Skinners gone?

You are missed...

Friday, November 22, 2013 by LightStar | Discussion: Skinning

I have 4 out of the 5, and sometimes all 5 Master Skins on the front page of WC right now. I spend 8-10 hours a day, 7 days a week designing and trying to improve my skins, and when they are done I want to post them to the site, but I can't. I can't because I feel like I should wait for others to submit their Master Skins so they have front page time, but alas, no one submits and I am beginning to wonder why.

There are 44 Master Windowblinds skins in the gallery right now, and since I became a Master around a year and a half ago, 20 of them are mine and I have one other finished (Allure) and just waiting for time to pass, and one more (Brilliance) in the works!

So where are the other Master Skinners?  I know why vStyler and Xiandi are not skinning right now, but what about the other Masters?  TomRichter, MikeB314, adni18, theAVMAN, Vampothika and other Master Skinners... where are you? I miss seeing your works, and I am sure others miss them too.

Bit like the Fakawi Tribe ....that bunch of 4ft pygmies running around in 5ft grass saying "We're the Fakawi" ...

I know many of the Masters but not all since I have only been here since 2007. I can tell you I have checked out all the beautiful work you people have done and have not forgotten any of you. You all deserve what you earned.

The problem is that we can no longer see each other's ranks. So Masters, and others, can easily be forgotten, if not active.

Us long timers know who's who, pretty much, but new WCites haven't a clue.

I hope the powers that be decide to bring back our ranks, or list them under our avatars, or on our profiles, etc..

I can remember being a noob... and a Master dropped in to leave a comment on my third ever uploaded wallpaper... It was very heartening... in those days, rank was shown in gallery before peoples names....

That Master was Z71... so no, Z71... never forgotten...

The status of a Master skinner does not incorporate to ciruculate skins only but to encourage folks around by giving some hints, advices and help to them. Provided there is a new guy coming in asking for help and such a help is given by a Master skinner I doubt he will know it is coming from a Master unless a Master says: "Hello I am a Master skinner ready to help you" and this sounds a bit ridiculous to me as I have never done this and will not. It is not about being forgotten rather about the fact that especially new members do not know that. So I am all my worth to put member status beneath the names. Not because it is convenient and it would please my eyes. I think it is because it is right. Do you folks disagree?

No objections from me on showing the rank before the nick (or after)...whatever folks want should probably be considered.

I think that not being 'forgotten' also involves participation...not to the exclusion of everything else in that person's life, but with a certain 'presence'...

like updating classics (Concept, Continuum, sheesh! So many!!!)...an encouraging word here or there...to less experienced skinners.

I still remember very fondly syd pushing me to do a Wall...to try. And her presents to me when Ethan was born.

I believe somewhere I read that when the site was fixed awhile ago to add something there wasn't enough room to keep the rank titles. It's code and can be added to any web site in any place.

I have a couple ideas and totally agree a members rank should be available to see. It should still be visible from where it use to be. However with all the recent new members not having a wincustomize site here is what I would like to see.

Just look above at the post. You see the persons name, date, and karma. Now look at any SD person. EXample would be Doc you see his title. "Winzop" Or Jafo, ID and others with their title below the Karma. I see two options here. One Remove the karma and add the persons rank there or add it below the karma as that can be done because it's done now with SD people and also other forums.

Masters that have stopped skinning for whatever reason still make post and are active. What ever rank it's the right thing to do to let members know what they have done in the past to move up the ranks so to speak.

Either way it's not something that is going to upset me as i'm beyond that with my age. Just feel as I said it's the correct thing to be visible to all. Last thought. It may even inspire more people to skin and be more active on the forums in hopes they can move up. Take the military. Earn a promotion and get another stripe on your uniform. Now everyone knows what rank they are. I know this isn't the military and used as an example.

Ok, that's it and I wish all you members a wonderful holiday.

Actually...Island Dog and myself [and others] are now listed as 'Stardock' rather than more specifically 'Admin' - which would help clarify to others who 'manages the community site/s'.

I can't say there's a real lot of 'benefit' in awarding promotions to people when there's no actual indicator of those promotions.

Ideally the visible rankings NEED to be restored.   They can have more 'value' than Karma points .....afterall...when Doc has 2k of them it's obvious the system is screwy....

I agree 100%. But I didn't say to just go and award people for doing nothing or in fact didn't say anything about anyone being awarded to a higher level. Just feel if the ranks were visible others with lower ranks may or maynot be inclined to participate more in order to deserve or be considered to a higher ranking. Who knows if the ranks are listed if it would make any difference but the only way to find out is to try it. Use to be you could have fun for a good part of the night with people on here. Now you are lucky to see hardly any post after 6PM. I don't have the answers only some thoughts and suggestions now and then. This WC is enjoyment for me and would like to see it go in an upward direction whatever it takes.

I'll agree with that. Presence is always a factor. Also, I looked and there are a lot of Masters that have been absent for over a year.

My reason was my computer crashed and I've been using a 13" laptop. Finally was able to get a new computer, a couple of months ago (sadly no Win8).

Updates? Concept (maybe, though I've already updated it once) but not Continuum. It's still some what new with Win7 (Master skin).

Oh, and I have (2) updates coming this week, with more skins on the way.

Since rankings are arbitrary it's a little hard to take them seriously sometimes.

Master Skinners should be given some title that identifies them as having attained a certain level of creativity for their skins to be approved for sale by Wincustomize. "Supreme Skinner" or something like that, maybe...

By definition; an apprentice is an individual that attempts to learn a trade under the tutelage of Journeyman.

Generally; there are hard specific goals that an apprentice needs to achieve to move up the ladder. (Apprentice 1, Apprentice 2, etc.)

Giving people rankings just because you like them, for me at least, detracts from fairness of the process. Promote because they're cute and funny, withhold because they're a pain in the... Regardless if they have actually uploaded anything.

I'd more like to see it revised, remove the personality portion of the definitions, provide achievable goals or forget it.

Could ranks be color coded and the nic's appear in the proper color?

Promotions are given on the strength of whether we like what they DO, not who they are.  WHEN they do something we do NOT like the inverse applies.

It's not rocket surgery to define 'contribution to skinning' as being MORE than [simple] prowess at Photoshop....
