When a http is typed on this site, it turns into an icon. How is this done?

My guess would be that the code to display the icon is in the Tag somewhere

Basically when you put in a well formed URI the server intercepts this and substitutes it with the icon you see on the site.

It shouldn't make any difference, but 1.0 has been out for awhile now. You may want to try upgrading to see if it takes care of the problem.

You *are* talking about links in the message area, right?

I've now got version 1.0 but it hasn't made any difference...the links are still written out in full and are not clickable...I'm referring to links in the description area. I think we're talking about the wsame thing.

I thought you were talking about links here, in the discussion area. Links aren't yet supported in the description area, but it's on the To-Do list.
