Start8 full logo flat

First let me say thanks to everyone who participated and helped others in the forums with testing.  I was pleasantly surprised at the amount of entries submitted, and the conversations it generated in the forums with people offering to help others.  I was also happy to see some skinners break from their regular skins to try something news, so overall I think this mini-contest was a big success.  It was really tough to choose winners as all the entries were of top-notch quality, but we choose the winners based on the design and creativity of the entries.

1st Place – 123GGamble by Roloccolor

2nd Place – Switch by RedneckDude

3rd Place – Sountox by c242

I’d also like to post some honorable mentions:

Thanks again to everyone who entered, and I’ll contact you about winnings in a day or so.

Thank you... I was online this morning and wanted to write some words- sadly I only had very little time because I had to get to the university... this is a very cool 30th birthday gift for me - Yes i turned 30 today
Im Happy about the first place of course but  would like to congratulate everyone else who participated in this mini competition.
I now have enough buttons for all my fav. skins hehe..

It is hard to work on such small space and i was surprised by the buttons and the level of creativity in some of them ID already named some of them:

I loved "Parisienne8 by BoXXi - Sountox by c242 and Triffid by Stramp"

GMC- uploaded some great great minimal buttons : to name a view you should definitely check out is "Glass Button Set6",Tempered,Chachet8...

Best idea RND - to be honest my first button was a lock... but not a ignition-lock -very cool!

Now excuse me i have to get back and maw the lawn before my guests arrive and we start the BBQ ^_~

Why, thank you Roloccolor, what a nice thing to say!

I can see why you got first place though, you got a lot of detail in a very small space, very high quality as well!

I wish I could have added the sound of a starting

Thanks RND,  ^ it should be possible to set system sounds for the start button- i know it was possible in windows95 plus... if not Stardock could try to add sounds for mouseover and pressed start states...

NP I do like your submissions and the way you displayed them in your preview   it is I who has to thank you 4 free buttons the least i can do is tell folks to check them out...

Many Congrats to the winners of this contest! You all did a great job. It was a great idea to spur uploads of material to go with Start8! Everyone did a great job & should continue as this does help dress up a some what lacking & dull OS. We must push MS to allow greater customization of it's system & make it more exciting to use. It's to their & our benfit and those who use these systems to spur creativity. What good is it to have Windowblinds, Photoshop, Paint shop pro, Gimp, Paint.Net, Real Draw or any other graphics program if you can't use it!? Are we reduced to just making buttons? Or will that disappear too? Xp Logon customization disappeared with Vista. Now DX. Windowblinds?  Yes give the casual user options but always include the imaginative user the option to tickle others fancy. Makes good sense money wise too. It doesn't take an idiot to see the direction they are headed and it shows in sales. There are no artistically creative individuals in MS & those in charge have lost touch with their base. They push us we need to push back. Some day you won't even be able to put up a background pic of your kids, pets, wife/husband, departed loved ones. Where will it end? In us being obsolete. On a different note I want to very graciously thank Jim "Redneckdude" for his gift of a WC subscription after getting a prize he so thoughtfully knew I couldn't afford it & gave out of his heart and never forgot me. He has been a very great inspiration to me. I am thankful for him & so many others in this & other communities who have encouraged me & given their time to help me become a better artist. We all must give him our prayers & support for his upcoming surgery! He will definetly be on my front burner always. He's a good man. Thank you Jim!
