Whiners, Trolls, Morons....

Saturday, October 5, 2002 by T-Man | Discussion: WinCustomize Talk

I have been noticing of late that there has been quite a bit of name calling going on these days. It seems that anytime someone comes along and has a negative comment towards WinCustomize or someone else or who may have ripped a skin, a bandwagon of people tend to jump all over that person and tend to start calling them whiners, trolls, morons, etc, etc etc.

I personally find this behavior very rude and offensive and am getting very sick of it. So I ask all of you to please take more time when responding to such a post and really consider what you are saying. Its ok for people to have a different opinion and express it. Its ok to debate the issues and to try and explain your point of view. But its really not ok to start name calling.

Luckily there hasn't been any real flame wars that have resulted from this. But it doesn't take much. Just try to think about how you would feel if someone called you the name that you are about to call them just because you do not agree with their point of view.

Just excerise a bit more control when responding and do unto others as you wish them to do to you.

I don't think that we can really dictate a response plan that will work per se, because every troll, moron, or idiot who posts is a distinct individual. Some will respond well to a calm, composed reply, and some just assume that you're a PC ninny. I do think sometimes, that watching your rude posting slide down and off the MB without a single response is definitely a teaching technique.

or - have one person respond " If this is meant to be a serious posting with a question or comment, please rephrase".

Usually what you say dictates the kind of response you receive. The problem lies with the fact that most of the posts we've had recently (and there does seem to be a lot of them), consist of someone stating 'blah blah this sux blah blah' and then disappear without trace. Those sort of people shouldn't expect any kind of respect.

If someone doesn't like something and wants a discussion, they should go ahead and say it. No one will be offended by a different opinion. They will receive a civilized and polite respose. We've seen this with a couple of well known people stating they aren't happy and want to leave etc. No one called them names, but instead offered encouragement to stay and talk things through. That is how to do it.

But to simply post something in a fit of anger which is likely to upset or offend a large number of people is unacceptable. Assuming you're not intending introducing moderation for the message board which would prevent these inflammatory posts from being made in the first place, then free speech must be allowed to take its course. If you dish it out, you have to take it. Strange how no one seems to care about the "whiner, troll or moron..." causing offence to the majority with their ill mannered behaviour.

It is always wiser to deal with cause rather than effect. Treat the disease not the symptom and the body will remain healthy. Unfortunately at the moment this site is in need of a few asprin;)

It's always interesting to see how those that whine seem to be one post wonders (generally speaking).

Their belly is full, but their ravenous appetite for freebies unsated, so they whip through the message board on the way out to take a little parting shot at us. Duck and wave g'bye.

WOw. Anyone have some cheese to go with the whine the trolls are having. If anyone is interested; a guided missile hits the target by adjusting telemetry using negative input and not positive input. What in the name of Sam Hill that has to do with this thread I don't know.

I still support T-man. When somebody is in anger, he/she might just overreact and post. Most of those flames are because of misunderstandings and not knowing what policies rule on this site. I would suggest to update the "about section" and just write down clearly what policies take place, what favours subscribers and what visitors can expect.
For instance, this 404 people are complaining about. I would suggest to try to make some stats about how many times it occurs and at what time peak hours are. Visitors should be able to keep on skimming this site, they are potential clients, chasing them away is bad policy. Also make announces when there is maintanance to this site. Just a few things. In short, be clear on what can be expected here, and put that on for everybody to read in order you can refer to it. Much easier than always answering the same troubles.

Fuzzy Logic, I agree that "The problem lies with the fact that most of the posts we've had recently (and there does seem to be a lot of them), consist of someone stating 'blah blah this sux blah blah' and then disappear without trace." Since they have already disappeared, only those that remain actually read the responses. Therefore, don't yell at the ones that stay.

Trolls look for a response. Deny them their masochistic pleasure. (If I misspelled masochism, you would have to beat me, wouldn't you?) Remember that the troll won't read your response, but others will. Heh.

I do get fed up with people getting annoyed with newbies. Just remember they don't know any different. They didn't see the 'other' post last week cos they don't know how. And pc's are not easy things for everybody.

Be kind. Be patient. Be helpful. Just remember it was you once...

To think a 'troll' doesn't read their own post is naive. Like the arsonist who stays around to the the fire, they will be there...

i ain't supporting murder. i am supporting accuracy of ending a crock of !@#$ when it shows.

end it quick and hard...put them out of their misery. wipe their post from the boards. do something.

you let them sit you see what happens. the people who would see the rant disappear don't post...fine. but others can't always hold their tongue. sometimes they vent on the people who are verbally assaulting their community. whatever.

you want it stopped, just remove it.

otherwise, you have to "trust" everyone to "do the right thing"...which is a crock and you know it. not everyone sees the "right thing" the way you do.

"you" does not mean anyone specific in my posting...fyi.
