CPU fan dying....

Monday, February 18, 2013 by Jafo | Discussion: Personal Computing

Well...I guess it takes/took 10 days or so of over 30c weather... but after x years of almost permanent running my V8 Coolermaster fan decided to bugger off and go troppo.

It's not like it was ever an issue.....until a shutdown/reboot ...cos I never shutdown.....

But then silly old me did.

So the fan said time for a holiday and shut up shop.

I got it kick-started one time with some compressed air and a poking or three....

...but today it said 'no way, Jose,  find some other poor sucker..'  [or in this case....blower].

Fortunatement I'd had a wee chat with yrag and he'd suggested a spiffy thing made by Noctua....yes, wait for it.....

...a FAN.

So I had just received a pair of 'em just this same day....fortuitous or what?

Now....my system was still failing to boot....BIOS having a hissy-fit that the CPU fan was having 'issues' namely it was AWOL.

So....not to be outdone I unplugged the fan from the V8 and plugged in the new trendy NF-F12 and figured...hey, no sweat...I'll just plonk it on top of the V8....it can do its blowing from there.....

And the system is a happy chappy....as I type this....fan hanging half out of the case....temps on average DOWN 6c.

Who needs to fit the thing actually INTO-THE-COOLER?

System won't know itself when I put both of them in.....PROPERLY....

Noctua fan and coolers are pretty top notch in every aspect they cool and transport air pretty well, super quiet, and a warranty of 5 years- if it starts making noises ( IF ) ball bearings gather dust or things just dont work on silent level anymore you simply mail the customer support ( you dont even have to contact the retailer where you bought it from ) Noctua customer support is pretty awesome i had a problem once and told them that my fan was making noises and i need a replacement they said we will send you a new one and if it is arrived you can send us the old one... was pretty nice since i needed to work on that pc...
My cpu is cooled by a NH-D14 and i have amazing results in terms of cooling...
replaced all Lian-Li fans with noctuas and i cant hear anything from my rig
some stats for geeks ( all fans run at 30%+- ) have a controller for each fan

Too funny Wizard. I just yesterday had my HP laptop cpu just fry and now my laptop is next to me in about 45 pieces, just to get it out. I am going to try the repair, but ain't holding my breath. A desktop pc, would have been done in five minutes!

AS long as there are thieves in the world, and lazy employees, there will be destop pc's. To easy to steal a laptop and hide what your doing .

I wonder if anyone has ever run a laptop nonstop for a year even without it cooking everything in it. Desktops are still king.

i7 3630Qm (3 gen)

3.4 GHz

32gig RAM

128gig ssd + 1tb hdd

17" 1920x1080 (full HD)

That's better than most people's desktop PC

Impressive specs for a laptop, but it also looks like at a premium price, like considerably more than I paid for my desktop rig.  I looked it up and see it starts from $1699 AUD for the 16gb RAM model, so one could reasonably assume the 32gb model is $2000 plus... probably up aroud the $2500 mark.  My rig cost nowhere near that much, and at the end of the day, you're paying big money for portability that still doesn't match the power of a somewhat cheaper, high-end desktop PC.

Jafo you leave your system on all of the time? I couldn't do that. Stresses the components too much, and wastes power.

Roloccolor what app is that?

It is AIDA64 it is pretty good program offers anything you want benchmarks stress tests monitoring temps- to much to name
For me its a must have. You can read more about it on the link below
AIDA64
PS my system also runs day and night ,i have to clean the dust catchers about every month and give it a compressed air cleaning like every 3 months,
the good thing is if you have good hardware you wont waste that much energy like you would with older one current processors need much less energy to run and then you can also send your pc into sleep ( save energy )

2of3 ...I doubt you'll find a laptop that has a twin GPU with 3gig of DDR5 that can push 2560x1600 ..... http://www.asus.com/Graphics_Cards/ENGTX5903DIS3GD5/#specifications

Kona...cycling electrics can do all sorts of things...including 'fretting' of blade contacts....and if it weren't for a shutdown/reboot my fan would still have been ticking along ignorant of the fact it'd been going for three and a half years.

It was stopping it that killed it...as it simply failed to restart...

No, refuting the suggestion that a Laptop could be 'better' than a desktop.

I didn't mention the 6TB of HDD or the 256G SSD.....or the REAL speakers not squeakers...

...or the MODEST 22" screen....

I care, Paul.

I'd post my rig's specs but Kona would say they aren't good.

No, he has a great rig he built himself and is proud of it. Nothing wrong with that, and actually, some of us DO care.

Tim, my box has 16 GB ram, 2 EVGA GTX 650 gfx cards pushing 4 monitors@ 7400x1080 and a 32 inch HDTV, 2 X 1TB platter drives, one 256 GB SSD and a triple core CPU.

I'd put it up against your lappy anytime...hehe.

Terry, if it weren't for those of us who do upgrade our systems, you wouldn't have the rig you're posting from.

You should be glad we upgrade our systems and have extra parts to send you. You really take the cake sometimes......

You guys misunderstand me and my intentions. First of all I will always be grateful for this machine and the help I received. That will never change, and as always I say thank you very much. It just seems that every time there is talk about hardware Jafo comes in and says what he has in a manner that reflects an attitude of "look what I have. It's better than yours." He did it back in the Pentium 4 days as well. Now I am sure he is proud of what he build and that great. I just don't think we need to hear comments like "I doubt you'll find a laptop that has a twin GPU with 3gig of DDR5 that can push 2560x1600" or "I didn't mention the 6TB of HDD or the 256G SSD". It just comes off a bit antagonistic. Sure, many people here have rigs with better hardware than a notebook. I don't see them posting such comments unless asked to do so.

Perhaps I read those comments wrong. For that I am sorry.

Oh and WOM - People do change. You just fail to see it.
