why even bother

Saturday, July 20, 2002 by Yobhsi ma | Discussion: WinCustomize Talk

I liked coming to this site to get skins, mostly icq skins or wallpaper backgrounds. But things like limiting us on our d/l's isn't really fair. I mean I have an account, but I haven't bought ne of the programs that u have to buy, but this shouldn't b a problem, You should b able to d/l as much as u want.

I see the point in making an account, but makin us buy software that we probably don't like or will never care to use just to get unlimited d/l's from here, isn't really what I'd expect. You should have a limit on ppl d/ling if they r a guest but you shouldn't make ppl buy product's just to get wallpaper's or icq skins or skins that other ppl want to share.

I'd admit this site has some great wallpapers, but making it where we only have a limit on what we can d/l makes me go to other sites, that way I don't have 2 care about having to buy a product that I will never use. I've used Windowblinds and really, I don't care 2 much for it. There r some great skins, but for Windowblinds, it keeps messing up XP.

Y don't the ppl that own this site just do what other sites do and just let u d/l what u want, other than giving a limit, making limits makes me give this site a lower ranking than other free sites.....but maybe it's just me.....

Amish Boy...the reason [one of then, anyway] that the Wincustomize 'collection' of wallpapers is so 'enticing' is because people such as myself 'politely' reject a substantial percentage of the submissions....and I'm doing that here for anything up to 2 hours a day, on a 56k modem and paying AUS $1.00 per hour for the privilege....adds up to about 6-700 dollars a year.

As I said, I really won't miss your departure if you're such a cheap-skate that you can't see fit to 'help' support this service you are so willing to use.

As for site running-costs, again, my annual professional income would cover about 3 months of it.
If it weren't for Stardock paying the bills, you wouldn't even have the 100meg that you do already.

Why should they be paying for you to DL 'product' from this site?

Grow a conscience, a sense of moral, ethical responsibility, or go away.

Your choice....

This guy's attitude got to me so badly that I had to run off, stop procrastinating, and subscribe. Even if I kicked off tomorrow, the modest quantity of stuff that I've downloaded is more than worth what I just paid to subscribe. I think this guy would be great pals with ofaj.

You need to post using the skinbrowser and not the other one.

You need to post using the skinbrowser and not the other one. You will see this post again at 10:05. Thats the time the skin browser used when I posted this using it. Kind of wierd.

Why do we keep having this same conversation? "...blah blah this site suks blah blah I've just downloaded 100megs of stuff and now I've got to pay blah blah...".

Bring the download limit down to 10megs, that should see off all the leeches.

So what has this person contributed besides starting another one of these 'bashing' threads?

Lets have a world where nobody has to pay for anything, wouldn't that be cool...

I think someone else said it but it bears repeating, the only thing more insulting to me than Amish Boy's insinuation that I as a skinner am too dumb to realize that I'm being ripped off, is that he thinks that I am also too dumb to realize his complicity in the ripoff, until he reached his 100 Mb cap and could no longer participate.

What a horse's rearend.

I guess that if all the skinners quit uploading to the other sites then he couldn't keep getting all the skins for free. Then maybe he would cough up the $20. But I guess that would hurt the other sites unless they just link to this one.

!! I'd open a site immediately where everything can be downloaded for free...And when I have enough customers I start to charge $20 and make sure the popular skinners will be paid by me

Taking the Stardock hat off...

I've made a lot of skins. Even if WinCustomize wasn't something I had anything to do with, as a skin author, I like WinCustomize for these reasons:

1) There are no pop ups. I can submit my work and be able to see how it's doing without having a zillion IE windows up after a few hours.

2) My work will be seen by lots of people.

3) I don't have to worry about a "hard drive crash" that'll wipe out all my work because I know this site makes weekly backups.

4) The site is reasonably fast.

5) The site is almost always up and available.

6) This site will protect my work, they won't let people use my work without permission.

7) This site is run by a end user customer driven company which means I know they'll not do anything to tick everyone off if they can avoid it.

These things matter to me as a skinner. I think they matter to most skin authors. I could be wrong but that's what I think. And I recognize as an adult that the above factors come with a cost.

once again the person who posts these comments jets after making them.

Once again the peson comes up with all the reasons why they should get free downloads but never explains or responds to the comments that this site has to be payed for, maintained and host megabytes worh of stuff.

I love this types of questions. most of the people who post it do not seem to realize that you do not HAVE TO BUY ANYTHING!!! the person who posted this thread, I haven't seen him on one message board until now. no comments no news reports NOTHING.

Just because I havn't seen his name before doesn't mean he din't post but dang!! and then boom a post like this. Then she says, "I guess Stardock lost me as a customer." What is funny about that is that she doesn't seem to realize the lack of power behind the statement

AND once agian I miss all the action!!
